I found this to be very interesting and a great example of the complete polorization of every major issue that we face as a society. My thoughts as an ex-energy executive to a born again CCUS start-up founder and leader: 1. The impact of man made CO2 on our planet seems difficult to quantify and is not a settled issue. That being said, as a society we have determined that the reduction of CO2 in the environment is necessary and a priority. 2. The idea of renewable energy seems great but the reality is the transitional cost to our way of living, the actual impact on the environment and the geo political politics makes a near term transition impractical if not impossible. People just distrust governments and media when an issue such as this requires great leadership. 3. The logical way to a carbon nuetral world has to be a combination of capture of CO2 produced by the combustion of fossil fuels as well as industrial processes along with advances and ongoing utilization of renewable energy that actual has a low carbon life cycle. 4. The consumers of energy will pay for this one way or another. a. Through a carbon tax either direct based on CO2 produced per btu of energy. b. Indirectly as the government spend our tax dollars to directly develop and promote capture. c. Through direct regulation such as environmental permitting. 5. Industry can and will economically solve these issues efficiently. Government will not, although they can provide incentives and penalties to facilitate and focus industry. For example, the idea of direct air capture at .04 percent CO2 from the air vs not capturing existing 100% existing CO2 sources make zero sense. I think of other environmental issues we have solved such an Flurocarbons, DDT, NOX, SOX and many others. All issues that human innovation has solved.
Exploring how to align business with the planetary boundaries. Sharing what I learn along the way at Post Growth Guide.
"Carbon Capture and Storage has captured... FUCK all" Why CCS is here to "save" big oil - not the climate: I rarely watch a 4+ minute to the end on social media. But I have watched this video several times now. I never know whether to laugh or cry. Here are the highlights: → Big Oil lobbying for subsidies to cover CCS costs. → Projected capacity (year 2000) was 4900Mt CO2/year → In 2020 the capacity was 10Mt CO2/year (that's 0,2%... oops) → Look up 'Enhanced oil recovery.' CCS to extract hard-to-get oil. Talk about being fooled. CCS sells the fantasy that you can continue business as usual and let new technology fix your problems. Not only is there no empirical evidence of CCS delivering on CO2, but CCS strategies also ignore all eight planetary boundaries, the unequal exchange between the Global North and the Global South, and rising inequality.? CCS is a distraction, not a solution. If you want to learn more about what planetary boundaries mean for business (and avoid distractions), I have created a free 6-day email course on it. ??
