The Denver Housing Authority’s Sun Valley Block 3 project, designed by OZ Architecture, integrates affordable housing with community-focused spaces. Key features include 358 affordable units, structured parking, live-work spaces, a rooftop garden, and a food incubator to support local businesses. The development also includes age-restricted housing, townhomes, and an accessible riverfront park. The phased project ties the neighborhood to the river through a series of connections and emphasizes sustainability and neighborhood regeneration, with completion targeted for 2025. This week at AIA Colorado's GENERATE 2024 Practice + Design Conference in Keystone, OZ Principal Joe Anastasi highlighted the many benefits of mass timber as a building material, from its ecological and environmental advantages to its biophilic qualities and enhanced speed of construction. This presentation session reached many of our partners and collaborators. Our team at OZ is excited about expanding the local interest and alignment on leveraging mass timber. Mass timber has gained momentum nationwide and the mountains of Colorado are no exception. Sustainable materials like cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glue-laminated timber are being used to bring a modern wood aesthetic to various project types, including offices, multi-family/mixed-use, commercial, and more. This week at the AIA Colorado Design Conference in Keystone, Joe Anastasi, Principal at OZ will present on this topic and speak to Colorado's first CLT office buildings. Topics will include why mass timber was used, unique design and detailing considerations, and interaction with building officials regarding fire and life safety. OZ has been charged with reimagining a well-established district in the Southwest. The project aims to add density, reweave the area's urban fabric, enhance connectivity through thoughtful circulation, and activate street edges with pedestrian-scaled elements. Given the region’s arid climate, deep overhangs and sheltered outdoor spaces provide passive, sustainable solutions to extend the outdoor seasons while keeping buildings cool. This mixed-use development includes substantial?retail, dining, Class A office space, hospitality, and multi-family residences. Through our partnership with Creation RE + PE and Dig Studio, Inc., we aim to deliver more than just buildings for living, working, and recreation. We are proud of our interior design partner, Rottet Studio—check out the spread in Interior Design Magazine that shows off the The Crescent Hotel, Fort Worth. The hotel is located across from the Kimbell Art Museum and draws interior inspiration from the forms and art pieces. Runyon Arts did an amazing job curating the art to really work in unique spaces. The hotel is really a showpiece in itself.
