We are dedicated to working for the benefit of all.     Things move fast around here and sometimes it's hard to keep up. The official press release was Oct 29 so I'm only *almost* a month behind. ?? Well, back in early October I got an email that after reviewing my application, I had been invited to join the Center on Halsted's Inclusive Futures Leadership Institute, the first of it's kind, dedicated to advancing the leadership skills of the LGBTQ+ community and the next generation of leaders in Chicago. To say I was in pure shock is a bit of an understatement. It was an emotional moment for me and honestly I had to read the email about a hundred times AND have my wife read it for me to make sure I wasn't missing something or reading it wrong. How could quiet, lil 'ol me be labeled a leader. As a budding entrepreneur, I guess the first lesson is you've gotta take some risks, which is pretty difficult for risk averse people. Another lesson might be that there's not one right way to be a leader. Looking back, there are certainly moments I can point to where I was a leader, I just would have never used that label at the time. Anyways, I'm still in shock. And after meeting some of these incredible people for the first time almost two weeks ago, I'm so excited to be in the room with them and learning together for the next six months. And, since it's women in entrepreneurship day: Just take the risk. There's nothing cute about playing it small and counting yourself out of opportunities. Had I not taken this risk, I would've lost out on something that's already proving itself to be amazing and taught me so much after just one session. #WomensEntrepreneurshipDay #LatinaEntrepreneurs #LatinaLeadership

    Last week was *a week*. We took some time for ourselves, and then we got together and spent some time in community with our people. If you don't have community, you're always welcome here. Just reach out. One thing about us is, we are always going to make sure the people are fed. One way or another. This weekend we did what we do best and we coooooked. We nourished our bodies with pozole, arroz, frijoes, y pan dulce. There is a long road ahead, but for people on the margins, there's nothing new about living in constant fear and the risk of having our rights stripped away. The systems were not built for us and, therefore will never be there to care for us. Which is why we're going to keep doing what we do and caring for one another.

    Oyanova Enterprises was officially born! Though it was unofficially born many years ago. 5 grant and fellowship rejections, 4 years in the making, 3 pillars, 2 deaths all leading up to this moment. Life lifeing for the past 4+ years has only resolidified our purpose of forging innovative social initiatives through the power of community. Our mission of mindfully fostering, celebrating and amplifying the capacity to thrive as Black and Brown peoples through competent care, culture, education, growth and liberation. And our vision of massive shifts in systemic power dynamics led by Black and Brown people, steering society towards authenticated and transformational intersectional concepts with aligned entities. It’s now time to level up and board the Enterprise.     Remember when we referenced “some other major life things”? Well. Two of those life things were some pretty significant deaths. Jessica lost her dad in Summer 2020 during the height of civil unrest and the Covid-19 pandemic. It was unexpected, we had only a few hours between the dreaded phone call that something is wrong… to he is no longer here. Our whole lives stopped. Nothing else mattered. It’s important to note, our families live in Texas and unfortunately there is no super quick way to get to where our families live. Life was fucking hard. Turns out we have some pretty amazing friends who jumped into high gear helping care for our fur babies, apartment at the time and delivering groceries and meals. We couldn’t have survived without our community. Just as life was beginning to feel normal again… Summer of 2023, Emily got the dreaded phone call that something was wrong. There was a bit more time, roughly two months, maybe, where life was in limbo. Her dad was diagnosed with cancer and everything moved quickly as it often does with death. Our whole lives stopped again and nothing else mattered. Life was fucking hard again. Emily packed her things in early October, went back to Texas while Jessica held down the fort in Illinois so that Emily was able to see her dad through his transition out of this life. Again, it would have been impossible to do without our community. And it became more clear than ever, we have a dream and there is simply no time to waste on waiting for funding, getting things perfectly in order to set ourselves up for success.     Throughout those 4 years we began building a community of transformation. This was phase 1. And born out of phase 1 were the 3 pillars that will hold our community of transformation up. We hosted our first event, “Qubit: At the Intersection of Queerness, STEAM and Mental Health” where we put our 3 pillars into action. ? Foster education on STEAM, Mental Health, building generational wealth and leaving a legacy. ? Celebrate ourselves and give ourselves our flowers. We are more than our trauma and hardships. Trust, there will be celebration and unrelenting joy. ? Amplify. We are better together. There is plenty of room in our community of transformation. We will grow our own ecosystem full of beautiful Black and Brown people working to care for our communities be it through education, internships, trainings or mental health resources.
