Huge news out of Xsight Labs LTD! While the opening of X-ISA is a critical step for Oxide Computer Company and our next-generation X2-based switch, we believe that it represents a giant leap forward for the industry. As Ryan Goodfellow has phrased it: switching silicon has been awaiting its "x86 moment", when a well-documented ISA allows for an open ecosystem of compilers, operating systems and toolchains; with the opening of X-ISA, we have taken a big lurch towards that future. My colleague and I were on rack update duty this week at Oxide Computer Company. Guess how long it took us to update the entire rack? I'm talking the entire rack. Firmware and software for compute sleds, network switches, the power shelf, control planes services, and database migrations. Everything. From start to finish it took 1h45m. That's blazingly fast! 35 minutes of that was spent waiting for artifacts to transfer to the rack using a UART connection. This was also my first time performing the update so naturally I was moving more slowly and cautiously while being guided by my wonderful colleague Laura Abbott. This update speed is a testament to Oxide's hardware and software co-design. If you were to give me a 48U rack full of commodity equipment and ask me to update the firmware, software, and OS I don't think I could do it in 2 days, much less 2 hours. Heck, some of those components don't even expose a way to update firmware. Oxide is a great example of how modern computers can, and should, operate.
