We're thrilled to share that we've certified the first home to achieve the NGBS Emerald + Resilience badge! This project has special significance to the builder/owner, Christina Dorsa of Consilium Holdings, LLC. Christina isn't just focused on energy efficiency; she was rehabilitating her childhood home into a sustainable, resilient legacy for future generations. Given the significant upgrades and emphasis on reusing original elements, NGBS Emerald + Resilience badge was the ideal certification to capture the exceptional nature of the project. Christina's vision is to continue to remodel existing homes in Louisiana to be more sustainable and resilient to the changing climate. This project includes: ? Durastar mini split heat pumps? ? 16.4kw roof mounted solar panels ? 28.8 KW battery? ? Panasonic ERV ? Native butterfly garden (milkweed, red mulberry) We're excited about the future of building reclamation as it preserves the building structure while improving energy efficiency, home health, and resiliency. More information to come on the results of this exciting project. Thanks Pam Lewandowski for connecting us with Christina!

Our founders Nadia Saponara and Rebekah Phomsopha, LEED AP were thrilled to be invited on Emily Mottram's podcast, E3! The disaster recovery industry has only become more relevant since this podcast recording a few months ago. Let us know what you think!
New episode out today! S6E9: Energy Consulting with Oxalis Advisors E3 - Energy and Efficiency with Emily is all about building science, architecture, and female entrepreneurship. On today's podcast I had the pleasure of talking with Nadia and Rebekah with Oxalis Advisors. They are launching into the world of energy and environmental consulting. We recorded this podcast early into hurricane season and have only seen more dramatic natural disasters affecting vulnerable communities. It's with hope that people like Rebecca and Nadia will be able to help communities long term build resiliency into their buildings. How that happens and with access to what programs remains to be seen, but knowing there is someone to help navigate the challenges of building or rebuilding is something I hope to see these two ladies take on. https://lnkd.in/eC9MzR2d Oxalis Advisors https://lnkd.in/ejUBJ_rB

We had a great time last week attending our first Westford Building Science Symposium aka Summer Camp! Speaker presentation slides can be found at Building Science Corporation’s website under “events and training”. Highlights include: ??Invite and amazing fried scallops courtesy of Renee and Michael Broussard ??Meeting the rockstars (literally) at retrotec Ben Walker, we can’t wait to try out the new solo! ??Hitching an eventful ride back to Jersey with Nathan Rothenberg and Ed Janowiak that included a lifetime supply of life advice and HVAC wisdom ??Talking startups and ultra marathons with Steve Byers ??Learning about BetterHVAC from the one and only Bill Spohn, P.E. (We loved episode 170 of his podcast “Building HVAC Science”) ??Playing Joe Medosch’s legendary perfect wall card game ??Hanging out with Dylan Ingui who is taking the building science world by storm as a Michigan undergrad (yay for automation!) ??♀?Running into our favorite Alabama native & fellow energy rater Anna Miller ??Kent Browning’s presentation, especially the part about diagnosing causes of mold in industrial buildings ?? Marc Rosenbaum’s presentation on passive building construction and his jokes ?? Brian Hubbs’ presentation on a forensic building science project in New Zealand (and getting bonus Europe/Canada ski recs!) ?? Keith A. Simon, FAIA’s presentation on how to craft buildings to last 100’s and 1,000’s of years…function over style! We appreciate Joseph Lstiburek and Betsy Pettit for opening up their incredible home and putting on an educational and memorable conference. We can’t wait for next year!

Heat Pump Sizing: A Blindspot in the Clean Energy Transition ?? A recent UK study found that up to 70% of homes with heat pumps have the wrong size installed, leading to higher bills and lower comfort. Likely, we face similar issues in the US. The causes? Lack of knowledge, outdated calculations, and poor execution. While misaligned incentives may play a role, the main culprit is often a skills gap. But change is coming. New software like measureQuick and Conduit Tech can take the guesswork out of sizing. Pair this with workforce training, and we can empower contractors to deliver better results. However, we also need a shift in incentives. Too often, rebates reward installation, not performance. This can prioritize box-checking over quality. It's time to tie incentives to outcomes like efficiency and comfort. This will drive innovation and best practices, aligning contractors, consumers, and policymakers. Imagine every heat pump perfectly matched to each home's needs. What could that mean for adoption, business models, and climate goals? Let's turn this study into a catalyst for change. Together, we can build a market that rewards excellence and supports continuous learning. How can we leverage tech, training, and policy for better heat pump outcomes?
