In my journey of helping others embrace behavioral change, I’ve learned the importance of meeting people where they are—whether they face rigid mindsets or challenging habits. ??Recently, I worked with a patient from Override Health in his 60s who was feeling discouraged about his weaknesses and balance. To my surprise, his evaluation revealed he was doing remarkably well given his age and medical history. This experience was a powerful reminder that we all deserve grace, both for ourselves and for those around us. Did you know that the effect of?#chronicpain?on a person’s life is comparable to the impact of terminal cancer? A paper by AB O’Connor actually asserts that uncertain and lasting nature of chronic pain makes it worse than cancer, because at least with terminal cancer, you know there is an endpoint, one way or the other. All this is to say: chronic pain sucks. It’s hard to know where to get help and how to get through it. Chronic pain challenges inspire a whole host of creativity and ingenuity, which can be really additive in life and in the workplace. So before counting out people with physical difficulties or disabilities, think about what they've overcome and what you can learn from their. Chronic pain is hugely expensive and not looked at enough by payers.
Chronic pain is one of the more commonly misunderstood medical conditions.?For something that impacts close to a third of the US population,?we have a limited recognition of the economic impact of pain and a scarcity of effective treatment options.?In this blog, I report on an analysis?conducted on three large claims databases that compared the cost of care for patients with chronic pain and those without pain.?In this data,?I found that approximately 30% of patients suffer from chronic pain, with a slightly higher prevalence in females (58%). I also found that the cost of care for chronic pain patients was 430% higher than for those without chronic pain, and for patients with high-impact pain or opioid use, costs were 655% higher. Given the impact that chronic pain has on human suffering and as a driver of healthcare costs, payers and providers should prioritize resources to address this condition.?Further efforts should be made to provide effective treatment strategies, including interdisciplinary care teams such as Override Health, to address chronic pain and reduce the cost of care.
