Trust in healthcare continues to decline at an alarming rate—Gallup reports that trust in physicians has dropped from 67% to 53% since 2021, the largest decline of any profession. Like many other facets of society, trust is dropping within the medical profession as a whole with pharmacists and nurses even falling, two of the most trusted and respected vocations. As Dr. Nicole Rochester put it, “We need to be aware of the mistrust and own it as our problem.” Our Medical Director, Lisa Belisle, MD, PhD, MBA, MPH, FAAFP, CPE, reflected on this issue after reading The Wall Street Journal's article located here - https://lnkd.in/gzmH4WfU - sharing how communication breakdowns in healthcare have led to delayed diagnoses and unnecessary suffering. As she pointed out, the consequences are real—patients with low trust are less likely to seek the care they need, take the medications we prescribe, and follow the care plans we create, leading to widening health disparities. At Ovatient, although we provide care that is virtual-first, we believe that trust is built through human connection, continuity, and meeting patients where they are, connecting them to in-person care when needed. Virtual-first care, when designed intentionally, is a powerful tool to restore and strengthen that trust. We are tackling this challenge by: ·??????Prioritizing active listening and shared decision-making as core clinical skills ·??????Reducing care fragmentation by integrating virtual and in-person experiences ·??????Ensuring seamless information sharing across care settings to make every interaction feel connected ·??????Meeting patients where they are by providing whole-person care that integrates physical and mental health. As I shared last year, https://lnkd.in/gtsArMxV, trust isn’t just about clinical expertise—it’s about patients feeling heard, respected, and valued. I agree - we must own this challenge and rebuild trust one patient interaction at a time.

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal titled "Why We Don't Trust Doctors Like We Used To" highlights a troubling trend: trust in physicians has fallen from 67% to 53% since 2021—the largest drop among all professions measured by Gallup. "We need to be aware of the mistrust and own it as our problem." - says pediatrician Dr. Nicole Rochester. The declining trust issue, as outlined by journalist Ansberry Clare, hits home for me personally. Despite having several physicians in my family—including my father who practiced family medicine for over 50 years before his death in 2024 — I've frequently heard stories of loved ones feeling unheard by healthcare providers. These communication breakdowns led to delayed diagnoses and unnecessary suffering. The irony of being healthcare providers who couldn’t get other healthcare providers to pay attention to our words wasn't lost on us. As both a practicing physician and member of the leadership team at Ovatient, I see this crisis from multiple angles. The consequences are serious: only 14% of patients with low trust take prescribed medications, and care gaps widen between socioeconomic groups. At our virtual-first company, we're addressing this by: - Prioritizing active listening as a core clinical skill - Creating continuity of care despite physical distance - Ensuring seamless information sharing - Meeting patients where they are—both literally and figuratively To my physician and other healthcare colleagues: We must own this challenge. While systemic issues contribute to the problem, rebuilding trust starts with us—one patient interaction at a time. As I continue seeing patients virtually, I'm reminded daily that medicine's greatest tool isn't technology but authentic human connection. Our healing begins with hearing. "Compared with patients who had only office visits during the 18-month time frame, patients with telemedicine exposure had comparable or better performance in most quality measures we evaluated." - Dr Derek Baughman and colleagues, JAMA Network Open. As a family physician and leader at Ovatient, I'm encouraged by the evidence supporting virtual care integration. This cohort study of 526,874 patients found: 1?? Telemedicine-exposed patients had comparable or better performance in 13 of 16 quality measures 2?? Significantly better performance in all testing and counseling-based measures with telemedicine 3?? "Adding telemedicine poses low risk for negative outcomes for quality performance" - a key insight for healthcare leaders This research reinforces our approach at Ovatient, where we're thoughtfully blending virtual and in-person care to enhance clinical quality through our Epic-integrated work with patients in The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH). We are in the process of expanding patient access through our collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina's MUSC Center for Telehealth. ?? What impact could we have in health and care if our data was safe, secure, and trusted? When HDM spoke with Michael Dalton & Yasir Tarabichi, MD, MSCR, FAMIA at Ovatient at #ViVE25, they emphasized a key truth: “Trust is the foundation of virtual care—without it, patients won’t engage, and data won’t flow.” ?? Virtual care thrives on secure, seamless experiences. Patients expect frictionless access to care, not complex logins, disconnected portals, or redundant paperwork. Ovatient’s success stems from deep EHR integration, ensuring patients click a link and instantly connect with a provider in a trusted environment. ?? Patients won’t share data if they don’t trust the system. As Dalton put it, “If patients don’t feel their data is secure, they won’t share it—and without data, research and innovation stall.” Transparency in data use, privacy, and security is crucial to maintaining patient confidence in virtual-first care models. ?? Security isn’t an afterthought—it’s the foundation. As Dr. Tarabichi put it, “Patients trust the systems they know. By standing behind Epic and health systems like MUSC Health, we’re leveraging established relationships rather than asking patients to trust something new.” Instead of creating yet another isolated telehealth app, Ovatient uses proven security frameworks to ensure patient data remains protected. ?? Identity verification is essential for patient safety. In a virtual world, knowing that the person on the other end of the screen is who they claim to be is critical. Ovatient partners with Experian for third-party verification and real-time eligibility checks, ensuring secure, authenticated patient-provider interactions. ?? Virtual care isn’t just about access—it’s about local trust. Ovatient prioritizes deep relationships with a few health systems over rapid nationwide expansion. As Dalton put it, “We’d rather care for 500,000 patients in five states than 50,000 in 50 states.” Healthcare is inherently local, and successful virtual care models must integrate deeply with the communities they serve. If we get trust, security, and seamless integration right, virtual care can bridge the gap between digital convenience and real-world, patient-centered healthcare. ?? What’s the biggest trust barrier holding virtual healthcare back today? #HealthDataManagement #VirtualCare #PatientTrust #DataSecurity

My interview with Liz Adkison and Andres T. Santiago (Tito) to talk about the power of high-quality, virtual-first primary care was one of my highlights since launching Ovatient. I have known Tito for more than 8 years, long before there was ever an inkling of Ovatient. To hear - and see - first-hand the impact of the outstanding care he has received and the action he has taken in his own health journey was a great reminder of why we do this and what is yet to come for so many other patients we have the privilege to serve.
