Beatriz Kirzner has been an instructor Outward Bound Brasil since 2023. She had her first contact with mountaineering in 2018 during an exchange program in Mexico, where she became involved in various outdoor activities, primarily focusing on rock climbing. She recognizes the transformative impact that her experiences in the mountains have had on her life. For Bia, being in the mountains and other natural environments allows for a reconnection with ourselves, with others, and with the universe, bringing revolutionary experiences and reflections that can transform individuals and, consequently, the world we live in. Since 2022, she has been working as an environmental and experiential educator with children and adolescents, helping to mediate these young people’s internal issues and their relationship with the world around them. She holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from FAUUSP (2021) and is a Wilderness First Responder certified by NOLS (2024). She finds great meaning and purpose in the role of outdoor educator, and just as she was introduced to these experiences, she hopes to contribute to and continue the cycle of positive influences that outdoor experiences can promote in individuals and society. In this post, you will meet and read the testimony of Felipe, a student from Outward Bound Brasil’s social project Azimute. Felipe participated in this project in 2013 when he was 18 years old, and today he shares how his life has changed since participating in Azimute. Azimute Project: focuses on young people in situations of socio-economic vulnerability, particularly in large urban centers. The project aims to support these youth in overcoming their life and work challenges by providing them the opportunity to strengthen their personal, social, cognitive, and productive skills, inspiring them to develop their life projects—all through experiential education in nature. Azimute means "point on the horizon" and is synonymous with course and direction. Archive @outwardboundbrasil Student @ofelipequeviaja #OB #OBB #outwardbound #outwardboundbrasil

The heart of the Outward Bound experience is Learning by Doing. Students are placed in an unfamiliar environment, with the necessary tools for solving problems, and then challenged with a goal that requires teamwork and cooperation. This experience allows them to expand their communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills in an exciting outdoor environment. ? For a group of young writers, ages 14-16, a unique partnership between Hurricane Island Outward Bound School and The Telling Room every summer allows them to deepen their craft by exploring their writing, and the wilderness, in a new way. Every journey on the page, the trail, or the water begins with the same deliberate intention: the willingness to strike out on an adventure and walk into the unknown. Introducing Gray from Hurricane Island Outward Bound School! Gray (she/they), a new instructor at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School this past summer, found their way to HIOBS through a staff invitational hosted by the School in Florida. After working for Northwest Outward Bound School Outward Bound last year, Gray was inspired by seeing how the Outward Bound model unfolds on a pulling boat. As someone who loves the water, this combination of the ocean and Outward Bound was something she couldn’t turn away from. ? From enjoying sunsets and stars to battling crazy squalls and anchoring in pouring rain, Gray says that every moment can inspire and create connection—and sometimes the moments that should be the hardest are actually your favourite.?As an outdoor educator, she loves sharing the magic of the outdoors with students: “The sounds of excitement on the first night when students look up and can see the Milky Way, which leads into impromptu?lessons about star navigation, or any moment spotting wildlife, the call of the loons, seals following our boat around, all of it brings out this wondrous childlike energy in them.” ? Since becoming a part of the Outward Bound community, Gray says it’s changed their life in unexpected ways and they feel incredibly supported by fellow staff as well as the administration at HIOBS, adding that everyone genuinely wants to know how to help you achieve your goals and how to support you in the field.? ? “Every aspect of my life has changed immensely for the better in the last few years because of Outward Bound. I am surrounded by an incredible community of people, I live 90% of my life outside, and I get to show students the magic of the ocean and the potential in themselves. It certainly wasn't what I had envisioned doing when I grew up, but I couldn't be more grateful to have found my way here.”

This week, we are excited to profile Hurricane Island Outward Bound School's students, staff and programs! Hurricane Island OB School is part of the Outward Bound USA network. Alden, 17, came to Hurricane Island Outward Bound School with a love for the outdoors. A participant in the Leadership Sail program this summer, he was excited about the chance to sail along the Maine coast for two full weeks, but also a little nervous about spending such a long time in tight quarters with people he’d never met before. However, these nerves quickly melted away and were replaced with newfound friendships, camaraderie, and connection. “What surprised me the most is how close I became with all the people on my expedition in just two weeks. I think it only took 3-4 days to feel like I’d known [everyone] for a very long time. By the end of the course, it felt like we’d been friends our whole lives.” Reflecting on his experience, Alden says that in addition to the sailing skills he gained, he’s walking away with more confidence, compassion, and the ability to be comfortable with himself and others in different circumstances. And to future students considering Outward Bound, his advice is: “Try not to worry so much. It can be hard to be away from home and your regular routines, but you always seem to find your place on an Outward Bound expedition.” Together We Change Lives. Together We Are Outward Bound. #outwardboundinternational?#outwardbound

?? Proud to Serve and Grow! ?? This September, we’re excited to spotlight one of Outward Bound Singapore’s alumni... (drumroll)... Daniel Chan! At just 18, Daniel is already making waves as an active member of our alumni community, contributing to both environmental and social causes in Singapore. Whether he's getting his hands dirty during a coastal clean-up, raising awareness about marine waste, or teaming up with fellow alumni to organise a sports carnival for underserved children, Daniel embodies the spirit of Outward Bound Singapore, inspiring individuals and transforming communities! ???? Earlier this year, Daniel was part of a team that organised the "Values Sports Carnival," using fun and games to teach important values like kindness, helpfulness, and teamwork to underprivileged children. ???? Daniel shared, “Planning the activities for the carnival was challenging but incredibly rewarding. On the day itself, we had to quickly adapt to unexpected circumstances and blistering hot weather to ensure the kids’ safety and enjoyment. Seeing their smiles made all the hard work worth it in the end. ????♂???” He also highlighted how this experience has been pivotal for his personal growth. “Being part of this event allowed me to give back while developing my leadership skills. The sense of community and the chance to make a positive impact, no matter how small, is truly invaluable. ????” If you're passionate about making a difference, eager to embrace new experiences, and ready to grow as a person, consider joining us in the OBS Alumni community. It’s an amazing way to connect with like-minded individuals and contribute to meaningful change. Let’s work together to make the world a better place! ???? #GiveBack #Community #PersonalGrowth #OBSalumni #OutwardBoundSG

Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding Facilitator Spotlight – George Biesmans “There’s an intimate connection between our relationship with nature and our ability to build peace in the world. The Outward Bound approach goes right to the heart of this idea. Experiential Peacebuilding, developed by the Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding, is a perfect example of that. It seeks to cultivate human relationships - rooted in trust and compassion - using a blend of experiential learning and peacebuilding theory, while harnessing the transformative power of nature. It’s a compelling reminder that, in order to heal the divisions, wounds, and traumas which perpetuate violent conflict between our human communities, we need to first come back into “right relationship” with the more-than-human-world of nature”.
