During World War 2, Edmund gave the use of his homes to the Resistance, in which his brother-in-law, Gero vs Gaevernitz, was active. Gero vs Gaevernitz worked closely with Allen Dulles, head of the CIA. • GHOST OF A CHANCE He’s in his study and wears a suit and tie.? He caresses the gold watch in his pocket, A gift from his grandfather when he was a boy. It seems another perfectly ordinary day, The girls are scurrying down the stairs The little one, a girl with blue-grey eyes Holds a fluffy tabby in her arms: ‘I love him,' the little minx exclaims Someone’s knocking at the door. Knock, Knock, Knock The third knock is the loudest of all, The man outside looks at him with ice-blue eyes, Eyes like icicles on a snow-capped mountaintop The man in the suit and tie opens the telegram. The words jump across the page: ‘You have to get out - now, Your lives are in danger. Both of you and the girls If you’re to stand a ghost of a chance.’ The poem is dedicated in memory of my grandfather and my family: By Maya Published by Outside Voices

Both her father's homes in Ascona were used for international peace conferences during World War 1 and?World War 2. The Secret Surrender?negotiations involved meetings?between German and Allied generals and led to the end of WW2 in 1945. Angela was brought up in Haverford College, Pennsylvania, USA, where she lived with her family.? Her academic journey led her to become a renowned social anthropologist. She was awarded a Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies in 1979 and later received a research fellowship from University College London. Her expertise in Southeast Asian studies was recognised both at Udayana University in Bali and, closer to home, at the British Museum where she gave many lectures over the years. She loved teaching at the British Museum and her lectures were always in demand. Angela did research in Bali, Indonesia, for forty years. She taught and wrote several outstanding books on the island, including 'Healing Performances of Bali', which focuses on indigenous healing systems that are rapidly disappearing in the modernised and industrialised world. The first projects she supported were Amnesty International and?Exceed Worldwide. ?Angela Hobart.?Photograph?Courtesy Outside Voices

Outside Voices?was founded to give a voice through the arts and journalism to?those who are marginalised and rarely heard and to work towards a more informed, equal and open-minded society. We celebrate and focus on the lives of the everyday, working people; one of our objectives is to share the art and stories with everyone. Outside Voices also showcases and publishes art and poetry by a number of outstanding artists and writers who themselves have been marginalised. The art is sometimes heart-breaking; at other times it is inspiring, joyful and brimming with love and humanity. This project is dedicated to Angela Hobart who lives in London. She encouraged and inspired this project over many years. Her courage will never be forgotten. Photograph: Courtesy Outside Voices. All rights reserved 2024
