Last week, two separate families flew with Outlier Jets, each with a child on the autism spectrum. Wanting to get this right, I reached out to my brother, Connor F., a Clinical Associate and behavior technician for children. Connor worked with Sydney V. to create something truly thoughtful—a “Social Story”. These simple descriptive narratives are designed to help the families and children anticipate, navigate, and visualize new situations...from packing a bag, the exact car that would transport, the exact FBO and onward to meet the pilots, playing games aboard, and the hotel they’d call home for the next week. One child successfully flew, and the family shared how impactful the preparation was. Another family’s plans altered as the plane prepared to taxi- but I am hopeful that the social story, dimmed cabin, grounded/depowered, and staging on the remote apron area- all helped reduce some friction. It was a proud moment for me to see Connor’s dedication to his work and Sydney’s attention to detail and expertise. They made it clear that small touches, preparation, and empathy mean everything.
