  • Throwback to 2023 when 10 Native youth from South Dakota took their directing skills to the next level during our three-week Summer Film Intensive! With guidance from Hunter Redhorse Arthur, students learned how to work with actors and create a comfortable on-set environment—skills they put to use while making an #MTV commercial that aired nationally. Watch the video below to see them in action :) We've built something beautiful over the years, but we are entering difficult times. Support for Native youth, Black youth, and youth of color are under attack, and our work has never been more urgent. As federal policies dismantle programs designed to address historical injustices and systemic inequities, nonprofits like ours are at risk. We may be small, but we are powerful. Yet, sustaining our programs will become increasingly difficult. without community support and donations Now is the time to stand with us and ensure that Native youth continue to have access to the opportunities they deserve. ICYMI: ?Our program is FREE OF CHARGE. Students DO NOT PAY ANYTHING to attend. We offer all materials, plus transportation and meals (with support from our community partner, Thunder Valley CDC.) ? Over 200 individual Native and Black youth have attended our summer and after-school programs. Students came from Pine Ridge Reservation, Rosebud Reservation, and Sioux Falls, SD. ? We’ve taken students on two college tours, visiting schools like USC, UCLA, NYU, UIUC, and more. During our tours, students also?completed College Essay Admission workshops - critical especially after the US Supreme Court rolled back Affirmative Action ? Outlast has NO FULLTIME STAFF; despite that, we continue to offer high-quality art programming every year. Students even made an MTV commercial that aired nationally. Please consider supporting Outlast and helping us continue this important work. https://lnkd.in/geT7b3fS

???? Rhayn's unforgettable week at the Outlast Arts and Education film camp, supported by Mato Wayuhi, a proud Lincoln High School graduate from Sioux Falls and an Oglala Lakota artist, highlighted the importance of uplifting Black and Indigenous youth in the world of film and media arts. Outlast Arts and Education plays a crucial role in providing a platform for underrepresented voices, particularly those of Black and Brown youth, to be heard and celebrated. Their dedication to empowering young talents like Rhayn is paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive creative landscape. A special shoutout to Mato for his continued support and to Miss South Dakota Ahmitara Alwal for adding a touch of magic to Rhayn's film camp experience! Outlast Arts and Education just finished day one of our Visual Poetry Filmmaking Camp with youth from Sioux Falls. It's so beautiful to bring Black and Native youth together to build community through visual storytelling. Today, we discussed the various identities that make us who we are, culminating in students writing a collaborative poem titled "Tied In". We'll spend the rest of the week turning their poem into a short experimental film. Excited for what the rest of the camp will bring and to share their final projects! #CommunityBuilding #VisualStorytelling #YouthEmpowerment #OurVisualPoetryCamp #SiouxFalls #SupportNativeYouth

  • Outlast Arts and Education is thrilled to announce that we have received a grant from the South Dakota Arts Council! This generous support will go towards our upcoming Summer Advanced Study with youth from Pine Ridge Reservation. During this one-week program, students will explore and practice Dogme 95 style filmmaking, a movement created by Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. This style emphasizes using available tools to make a film rather than relying on expensive equipment and external resources. We can't wait to share the incredible project that will emerge from this program. Stay tuned for updates and thank you for your continued support!

  • We're excited to share some updates from our bustling world of student filmmaking. In just two weeks, we're heading to?Sioux Falls?to host our?Visual Poetry Filmmaking Camp?for Black and Native youth. This incredible opportunity is generously funded by the Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota and the South Dakota Humanities Council. During this week-long program, students will study how their identities shape their interactions with the world and how their personal experiences are interconnected with those of others. They will then translate their insights into cinematic visual poems, culminating in a community screening and town hall event. Just one month after our Visual Poetry Filmmaking Camp, we’re heading back to where it all started: Pine Ridge Reservation. There, we’ll host our?Summer Advanced Study. During this one-week program, students will explore and practice Dogme 95 style filmmaking, a movement created by Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. This style emphasizes using available tools to make a film rather than relying on expensive equipment and external resources. Returning Outlast mentor and longtime film educator Russell Aaronson will lead a crash course on Dogme 95, after which students will be given limited tools to create a short film independently. Additionally, licensed therapist Anika Carter will return to offer daily morning mental health workshops to help students navigate their emotions during camp and beyond. But that’s not all! Following our Summer Advanced Study, Outlast has been invited to?Shreveport, Louisiana, to host an?Introductory Filmmaking?workshop for Black youth. With the film industry rapidly growing in Louisiana, local community members must have first dibs on roles in the emerging film sector. All of us at Outlast are excited and extremely grateful to be part of the ecosystem ensuring Black and Brown filmmakers have access to the developing film economy in Louisiana. As you can see, we’ve been busy, and we hope to stay that way!
