Honoring Black Excellence in Science: A Legacy of Innovation & Impact At OUTbio Greater New York, we believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are more than just values—they’re the foundation of progress. As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor the incredible contributions of Black scientists whose groundbreaking work has shaped medicine and public health for generations. ?? Dr. James McCune Smith (1813-1865) – The first African American to earn a medical degree, Smith opened the first Black-owned pharmacy in the U.S. and used his expertise to dismantle racial pseudoscience. A true pioneer in both medicine and social justice. ?? Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831-1895) – The first African American woman to earn a medical degree, Crumpler dedicated her life to providing medical care to newly freed slaves. She also authored one of the first medical books by a Black physician, making healthcare knowledge more accessible. ?? Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston (born 1939) – A leader in public health, Gaston’s research on sickle cell disease led to national newborn screening programs, changing the standard of care for countless families. She was also the first African American woman to lead a U.S. public health service bureau. ?? Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett (born 1986) – A trailblazer in immunology, Corbett was a key scientist in developing the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, proving that representation in research drives innovation that saves lives. Their legacies remind us that representation matters—in science, in healthcare, and in every industry. Just as they broke barriers, OUTbio Greater New York remains committed to fostering an inclusive community where LGBTQ+ professionals of all backgrounds can thrive. Because when we uplift every voice, we create a future where innovation knows no bounds. Let’s celebrate these pioneers and continue pushing for equity in all spaces. Who inspires you this Black History Month? Drop their name in the comments! ?? #BlackHistoryMonth #DiversityInSTEM #OUTbio #InclusionMatters #LGBTQinSTEM #RepresentationMatters

Over the past few days, we’ve witnessed yet another wave of bigotry targeting the trans* community—words and actions that perpetuate harm and dehumanization. OUTbio Greater New York firmly denounces these appalling attacks and reaffirms our unwavering support for our trans* colleagues, friends, and loved ones. The biotech and life sciences community thrives because of diversity, inclusion, and the unique perspectives we all bring. Trans* rights are human rights, and there is no place in our industry—or society—for hatred or discrimination of any kind. In times like these, solidarity is not passive; it is active. It requires us to listen, amplify trans voices, and ensure our workplaces and communities remain safe and affirming spaces for everyone. For those looking to take action, educate themselves, or seek support, here are some incredible national and local resources: National Resources: Trans Lifeline: A peer support hotline run by and for trans individuals. The Trevor Project: Crisis intervention and suicide prevention for LGBTQIA+ youth. Lambda Legal: Legal advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights. Local NYC Resources: The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center: LGBTQIA+ programs and services, including support for the trans community. TLDEF: Legal advocacy and resources for trans individuals. Callen-Lorde Community Health Center: Healthcare services specializing in LGBTQIA+ care. To our trans siblings: You are seen, valued, and loved. Your contributions to this industry and beyond are immeasurable. We are proud to stand beside you, today and always. If you or someone you know is in need of support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to these resources or to anyone within our community. Let’s continue building a world where all individuals are free to live as their authentic selves. #TransRightsAreHumanRights #OUTbioGNY #OUTbio #InclusionMatters

??Today is World AIDS Day?? At OUTbio Greater New York, we honor those we've lost to HIV and AIDS, celebrate the progress we've made in treatment and prevention, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting ongoing research and awareness. HIV/AIDS has shaped history and continues to impact millions worldwide. Advances in science, including the breakthrough understanding that undetectable = untransmittable (U=U), have transformed the lives of those living with HIV and have empowered communities with hope and resilience. As a community of LGBTQ+ professionals in life sciences, we recognize the vital role of research, education, and access to resources in ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We align our mission with fostering collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity to drive advancements in healthcare. Let’s use today to reflect, support, and take action. Whether it’s advocating for equitable access to care, promoting education on prevention, or funding research for a cure, we all have a role in building a world without AIDS.
