On November 14, Mr. Maynard Holliday, Performing the Duties of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Critical Technologies presented the opening keynote address at the MATRIX Lab Autonomy Summit. The Summit, hosted at the University of Maryland - A. James Clark School of Engineering MATRIX Lab in California, Maryland, focused on the current state of autonomy and examined today’s autonomy use cases. Mr. Holliday’s keynote, entitled “Criticality of Emerging Technologies in Defense, Our Nation, and the World Today,” highlighted the gap of technological moonshots and our current reality, what the DoD is doing to bridge that gap, and current challenges in the autonomy landscape, specifically in the military and defense industries. Attendees were also able to self-tour the impressive MATRIX lab facility, which features an open air-land lab, an anechoic chamber, and a fluid dynamics tank. OUSD(R&E) Mission Capabilities leaders participated in the National Defense Industrial Association’s 27th?Annual Systems and Mission Engineering Conference, providing keynote addresses during various sessions the week of Oct. 28-31 in Norfolk, Va. Mr. Elmer Roman, Mission Integration director, addressed integrating joint force capabilities through mission engineering; Mr. Tom Simms, Systems Engineering and Architecture principal deputy executive director, spoke about digital transformation of defense engineering; and Mr. Ken Senechal, Developmental Test, Evaluation and Assessments senior adviser, discussed developmental test and evaluation as a continuum. The annual conference brings defense community members including program managers, systems engineers, chief scientists, and specialty engineers to highlight ways to improve defense acquisition and system performance. On Monday, November 11, 2024, we observe Veterans Day. Initially known as Armistice Day, this day is dedicated to honoring the bravery of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. November 11, 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a temporary cessation of hostilities was established between the Allied forces and Germany during World War I, which was then referred to as “the Great War.” Since that day we have continued to pay tribute to all American service members, both past and present, every November 11th. I invite you to join me in recognizing the courageous individuals who serve alongside us here in OUSD (R&E). It is a privilege to collaborate with each of you, as you embody a vital link in the chain of honor that safeguards the freedoms we cherish daily. Congratulations?to the winning teams of the VICEROY National Cyber Competition! ? This year’s competition was held virtually and engaged 175 students, forming 40 teams from universities nationwide. Their mission was to tackle real-world cybersecurity and electromagnetic spectrum challenges, involving infiltrating and eliminating enemy surveillance on a vital peace-keeping convoy.
