???? Historic Agreement Restores Cultural Burns in California ???? A first-of-its-kind agreement between the North Fork Mono Tribe and the State of California is bringing cultural burning back to the landscape—a proven, Indigenous-led wildfire mitigation strategy that enhances forest health, biodiversity, and community safety. ?? Why this matters: ?? Cultural burns reduce wildfire risk by clearing excess fuels while promoting healthy ecosystems. ?? Restores traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) that has shaped California’s landscapes for generations. ?? Strengthens collaboration between Tribal communities and state agencies to integrate cultural burning into modern fire management. At Planscape, we recognize the scientific and ecological value of Indigenous fire stewardship. Our platform helps land managers plan and implement fire-adapted strategies, ensuring that traditional knowledge and modern data-driven tools work together to build resilient landscapes. ?? ?? The Mountain Beaver: A Living Fossil of the Pacific Northwest! ?? Happy #FocalSpeciesFriday! Let’s talk about the Mountain Beaver (Aplodontia rufa). Despite its name, the Mountain Beaver, also called boomers, isn’t a true beaver—it’s actually one of the most primitive living rodents, with a lineage dating back over 40 million years! ?? Unlike tree-chopping beavers, these burrowing mammals spend most of their lives underground, digging intricate tunnel systems in moist forests along the Pacific Northwest. But wildfires pose a serious threat to Mountain Beavers. Intense fires can destroy the ferns, shrubs, and young tree roots they rely on for food. The loss of dense vegetation also exposes their burrow systems, making them more vulnerable to predators and extreme weather. Post-fire soil erosion and compaction can collapse burrows, forcing these rodents to relocate—often into less suitable habitats. Protecting riparian areas, maintaining soil moisture, and restoring post-fire landscapes with native vegetation are crucial for ensuring Mountain Beavers can continue their role as ecosystem engineers in forested habitats. These ancient rodents remind us that even the most secretive species play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems! ?? ???? Honoring Deanne Shulman & All Women Smokejumpers: Pioneers in Wildland Fire ???? In 1981, Deanne Shulman made history as the first female smokejumper, breaking barriers at the McCall, Idaho base and paving the way for women in wildland fire. Despite meeting all fitness standards in 1979, she was initially turned away for being just under the weight requirement—but she didn’t stop there. By 1981, she met the threshold and officially became a smokejumper, proving resilience and determination can rewrite history. Her 37-year career left a lasting impact on wildfire operations, international fire programs, and the generations of women who followed in her footsteps. ?? To all the women who have suited up, jumped into the flames, and pushed boundaries in wildland fire—your courage, skill, and determination continue to inspire. The work of smokejumpers is among the most physically and mentally demanding in wildfire suppression, and these women have proven time and again that they are more than up to the challenge. Thank you, Deanne, and all the trailblazing women in fire! #WomenInFire #Smokejumpers #WildfireScience #FireResilience #Trailblazers #FireManagement #FireHistory #BreakingBarriers #WildlandFirefighters

Have you heard the name Deanne Shulman? Deanne made history as the first female smokejumper working out of the McCall, Idaho base from 1981 until 1984. Her pioneering efforts opened the door for women in fire to join the ranks of smokejumpers and hotshots. When she applied to be a smokejumper in 1979, despite meeting all of the physical fitness standards, she was turned away for being slightly under the required weight. In 1981, weighing in just above the threshold at 132 lbs, her smokejumping years began. Her continued resilience is evident in her impressive 37-year career where she contributed significantly to both fire and international programs. ??
