Legacy Health has redefined what’s possible in transplant surgery. In August, Kidney transplant surgeon Dr. Nathan Osbun and the Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center team performed the first robotic kidney transplant in the Pacific Northwest—an incredible milestone in surgical innovation. This groundbreaking procedure gives hope to patients with complex needs, like David Mendez, who was the first patient to receive the robotic transplant surgery and is thriving after receiving a new kidney. Learn how this advanced approach breaks barriers and expands access to life-changing care. Read the full story here: https://bit.ly/3YVj6L5

Good health for our people, our patients, our communities and our world. Legacy Health is a local nonprofit that provides comprehensive primary, secondary and tertiary care services across the Portland and Vancouver metro area and the mid-Willamette Valley. That means helping people get healthy, and staying that way. Encouraging medical professionals to set a higher standard. Tending to the little things that help patients heal. And supporting our staff in doing whatever it takes to meet the needs of those we serve. But it's not just what we do, it's why we do it. At Legacy, our fundamental responsibility is to improve the wellness of everyone we touch, to empower people to live healthier lives, and to create a legacy that truly lives on. We strive to be a diverse, culturally competent organization. We strongly encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds and those who promote diversity and inclusion to apply. Today, we celebrate National Employee Resource Group (ERG) Day, recognizing the powerful role ERGs play in creating an inclusive, diverse and supportive workplace. At Legacy Health, our commitment to being an anti-racist organization is reflected in the work of our ERGs, which encourage a sense of belonging by connecting employees through shared experiences, cultures, and perspectives. From career development to community events, ERGs help create an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered. In partnership with our ERGs, we have designed a collection of unique icons, each representing the identity and values of its respective group. These icons and other assets in our digital toolkit empower employees to show their support and celebrate throughout the year, including recognition months and holidays. Check out the icons developed to celebrate our vibrant ERG community at Legacy.

Today is Veterans Day, a necessary time to pause and honor our Veterans courage, sacrifice, and leadership. This year's national theme, "A Legacy of Loyalty and Service," is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact Veterans have in shaping the future. This Veterans Day, we proudly spotlight one of our employees—George Pobi, a Marine Veteran and lead clinical engineering technician at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center. With an incredible 40 years of service to our organization, George has built a legacy through his work and commitment to supporting the Veteran community. One of George's most impactful initiatives is a special program for Veteran patients at Legacy Salmon Creek. Working closely with our nursing staff, George ensures each patient who self-identifies as a Veteran is honored with a small American flag placed outside their room. On Veterans Day, George and our hospital chaplain personally visit each Veteran, presenting them with a certificate of appreciation signed by our leadership. "Community is important. This program lets the community know that Legacy Health honors those who have served," George shares. But George's dedication doesn't stop there. George organizes a special display, gathering photos of Legacy employees and their family members who served in the military. This tradition is a tribute to the Veterans within our Legacy family, offering a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve. Among Legacy Health's more than 14,000 employees, 394, including 26 physicians, self-identify as Veterans. George, along with our Veterans ERG co-chairs Shamai Larsen and Jason Jones, have worked to create a supportive and inclusive culture for our Veteran employees. What began as George's vision for a Veterans ERG has flourished into a thriving space where Veterans can connect, share experiences, and support one another. To all Veterans, we honor you and are grateful for your service and the legacy you've created.

At Legacy Health’s Children Rehabilitation, groundbreaking technology is opening doors for children like Carter, who was born with cerebral palsy. While Carter is intellectually aware, his mobility and communication are limited. But thanks to Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology, Carter is beginning to control devices like computers and phones using only his thoughts. BCI uses a noninvasive headset to detect changes in brain activity, turning those signals into actions. Watch how our speech and language pathologist, Sebastian, assists Carter in using this life-changing technology, empowering him to communicate and engage with his surroundings: https://bit.ly/4hEJIsz *Pictured: Carter and his mother Lisa.

At the Family Birth Center at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, we are proud to be the first Level 1 nursery offering Interpulmonary Percussive Ventilation (IPV) as a groundbreaking respiratory intervention for newborns. Since October 2023, we've used IPV on 40 newborns, and thanks to this innovative treatment, we've kept 70% of them with their families, avoiding being transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This milestone is about more than just numbers—it's about families staying together during an essential time. We are proud to celebrate the impact of this innovative care and the family bonds we help strengthen.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge a disease that affects one in eight women in the U.S. For many, it's more than just statistics—it's personal. Whether through a loved one or friend, breast cancer has touched us all. What sets our breast cancer program apart is the lived experience of our team. Some, like Dr. Cory Donovan, our breast surgical oncologist, have walked this journey themselves. Dr. Donovan's experience has given her a unique understanding of her patients' emotional complexities, reminding us that recovery is more than just medical care—it's about offering empathy and support throughout the process. This month, Dr. Donovan shared with KGW News how her personal experience as a patient has shaped the compassionate care she provides today: https://bit.ly/40hjQMQ

Today, Legacy Health celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day by honoring the vibrant cultures, rich histories and enduring contributions of Native peoples across this land. This is a day to uplift and recognize the wisdom, traditions, and resilience that Indigenous communities bring to our shared future. This day replaces Columbus Day, honoring the legacy of strength and survival in the face of colonization. It is a powerful reminder of the truths that must be acknowledged, and the bright future Native peoples continue to shape. Portland stands on the ancestral homelands of many tribes, including the Multnomah, Wasco, Clackamas, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and others who have called the Columbia River region home for generations. On this day, we honor Indigenous voices, creativity, and traditions that continue to shape our community and enrich our world. We invite you to join us in celebrating Native artists, entrepreneurs, and the enduring spirit of Native peoples at the Indigenous Peoples' Day Celebration hosted by Portland Indigenous Marketplace.
