?? ?Advancing Soil Data Interoperability with Modus by Adie Pregenzer??? Soil testing is essential for modern agriculture, but a major challenge remains—differing lab test methods limit data comparability. For example, there are?16+ different soil pH testing methods?and labs often don't use the same ones or comprehensively share which they use, making data translation tough. To solve this, we partnered with?AgGateway and Purdue University?to develop the?Modus Method Library—a standardized system that aligns lab soil test methods with unique Modus IDs. This lab method library enhances data translation,?making soil data more?accurate, accessible, and actionable. ?? Happy World Soil Day! This year’s theme “Caring for Soils - Measure, monitor, manage” highlights the challenges of collecting and using soil data. These include low awareness of the importance of soil data, gaps in coverage, high costs, data silos, inconsistent methods and misaligned research strategies. At Our Sci, we have prioritized two of these challenges: ?High costs: We have developed SoilStack, an open-source platform to automate generation of stratified soil sampling plans to reduce costs. ?Data Silo’s: Together with OpenTEAM, the OATS Center at Purdue University, and AgGateway we have been working with the USDA to create modern, flexible and public data standards to lower the barriers of moving soil data from one source to another. #WorldSoilDay2024

Interested in co-designing open-source software in the Ag sector? How can we work directly with producers and farm organizations so those engaged in the work control their tech futures?? Can we fund tech together through birds of a feather?? Through NAPDC funded work, we're investigating these questions and understanding how open-source ag tech developers can better meet ag organization's needs, one organization at a time.
