OPP program staff recently completed the CONNECTICUT CENTER FOR NONVIOLENCE INC training program, which equips participants with effective tools and strategies for conflict resolution. Through this specialized training, staff gained valuable insights into nonviolent communication, de-escalation techniques, and collaborative problem-solving. These skills are vital not only for maintaining a positive workplace environment but also for engaging with the youth and families OPP serves. Conflict resolution is one of OPP's five foundational pillars which Organizational Capacity focuses on. Through consistent training opportunities, OPP ensures all staff are prepared to address conflicts constructively within a diverse and dynamic workplace. Thank you to the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence for facilitating this training!

Empowering youth with the key competencies needed to overcome barriers and succeed in education and employment.
关于我们
Our Piece of The Pie empowers 14 to 24 year-old urban youth with the key competencies to overcome obstacles and barriers and succeed in education and employment. The young people we help face many challenges. Whether it’s poverty based trauma, gang or justice involvement or victims of system wide issues, OPP focuses on providing the support young people need to achieve their goals! Our relationship-centered model is the key to our success. When a young person comes through our doors, he or she’s immediately connected with a trained, caring and proactive adult staff member who serves as a mentor and coach, building a lasting, personal relationship that spans the entire time that young person is enrolled at OPP. These adults, called Youth Development Specialists, help our youth find the spark that ignites their desire to improve their lives. They help young people navigate past barriers, and toward high school graduation, a college degree or vocational certification, and sustained post-education employment -- the keys to economic independence. Our staff is committed to the strategic and efficient stewardship of the organization’s resources to have the greatest impact on the youth we serve. We collect and use abundant data to measure our results, improve programs, and demonstrate success. As a leader in the youth development field, we identify, test, refine and employ best practices as part of our continuous improvement model. OPP’s unique model offers an effective combination of best practices in academic, employment training, and youth development services and an approach focused on the individual. While every young person receives a combination of academic, employment and youth development services, the exact plan that’s created for each youth addresses his or her specific needs and aspirations.

This morning, staff and youth from Connecticut State Department of Children & Families/Our Piece of the Pie’s Launch Program gave back to the community! We volunteered at the St. Francis Joan C. Dauber Food Pantry’s Annual Turkey Drive. Even in the cold and rain, our DCF young people made it an enjoyable experience full of song and collaboration???? Shoutout to Aleena Durant for sharing this opportunity with us!! Excited to join more civic engagement projects this holiday season??

??Friendly flash/bright light warning with the attached video???? Today, our Launch Program (in collaboration with the Connecticut State Department of Children & Families) team at Our Piece of the Pie showed up and showed out for OPP’s United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut Campaign!!! It was a fun reminder of how we’re always striving to help our DCF young people “launch” towards brighter futures???? Shout out to my amazing team (Kamille Cockings, Jenna Bronson, Janelle Chase, and Diondra Robertson) for the passion and creativity, and props to all departments that participated today!

One thing about having great workplace relationships at Our Piece of the Pie(OPP) is to always have a little humor while also advocating and supporting our young people. This year as part of our Annual United Way Giving Campaign we had a department decorating contest. And those who know me know how competitive I am, so I volunteered myself to be the elf and our staff fully abliged. Thank you to our wonderful staff for everything they do and their willingness to always step into the moment. An additional thank you to the OPP “Culture Champions” for planning and coordinating a slew of fundraising events as part of our Giving Campaign. Lastly, thank you to the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut for everything you do to support people in our communities. It’s an absolute pleasure to be your partner…

Today perfectly illustrated the profound impact a Youth Development Specialist at Our Piece of the Pie can have on their youth. Cecile O'Meara received a heartfelt gift of beautiful flowers from her grateful youth, serving as a touching testament to her transformative influence. Cecile's dedication continues to change lives! Consider me proud!

Hey ya’ll!! Ask for help from my following- my team at Our Piece of the Pie is looking for a volunteer opportunity occurring this month in the Greater Hartford area that our DCF youth can engage in. This could be an upcoming community event, something related to the holidays (i.e turkey drive or toy drive), etc.- anything that can get our young people in the community and participating in civic engagement! Please message myself, Kamille Cockings, Jenna Bronson, or comment if you have any opportunities??
