At Our Piece of the Pie, we’re always focused on helping our youth grow into their fullest potential through personal, academic, and professional goals. But one of my favorite parts of this work is taking a step back and getting to know our youth outside of those goals. My colleagues Jenna Bronson, Kamille Cockings, and I had an amazing time taking some of our DCF youth to Level99 Entertainment yesterday! The youth enjoyed working together in the escape rooms, literally and metaphorically lifting each other up through each challenge. It's moments like these—engaging in fun activities, building teamwork, and just enjoying the day together—that really remind me how important relationships are in this work. It’s about so much more than just the outcomes!

Empowering youth with the key competencies needed to overcome barriers and succeed in education and employment.
关于我们
Our Piece of The Pie empowers 14 to 24 year-old urban youth with the key competencies to overcome obstacles and barriers and succeed in education and employment. The young people we help face many challenges. Whether it’s poverty based trauma, gang or justice involvement or victims of system wide issues, OPP focuses on providing the support young people need to achieve their goals! Our relationship-centered model is the key to our success. When a young person comes through our doors, he or she’s immediately connected with a trained, caring and proactive adult staff member who serves as a mentor and coach, building a lasting, personal relationship that spans the entire time that young person is enrolled at OPP. These adults, called Youth Development Specialists, help our youth find the spark that ignites their desire to improve their lives. They help young people navigate past barriers, and toward high school graduation, a college degree or vocational certification, and sustained post-education employment -- the keys to economic independence. Our staff is committed to the strategic and efficient stewardship of the organization’s resources to have the greatest impact on the youth we serve. We collect and use abundant data to measure our results, improve programs, and demonstrate success. As a leader in the youth development field, we identify, test, refine and employ best practices as part of our continuous improvement model. OPP’s unique model offers an effective combination of best practices in academic, employment training, and youth development services and an approach focused on the individual. While every young person receives a combination of academic, employment and youth development services, the exact plan that’s created for each youth addresses his or her specific needs and aspirations.

Today was a day of community, story-telling, and advocacy at the CT Behavioral Health Partnership and Carelon’s 9th Annual iCAN Conference! Myself and my colleagues Kamille Cockings and Veronica Maldonado, MSOL, M. Psych participated in workshops, discussions, and a panel pertaining to improving behavioral health outcomes for young people facing mental health and substance use challenges. Through an informative session provided by the Connecticut State Department of Children & Families’ Transitional Services and Support Division, and a session detailing the harms of bullying in schools, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from reformative providers across the state. Our Piece of the Pie Board Member Noel Casiano, PsyD, LMFT spoke about “symptoms” and “crisis” when it comes to discussions about mental health and substance use. He made a crucial point that symptoms are a result of unmet needs, which can lead to crisis. This enhanced my understanding of addressing larger systemic issues that may be contributing to mental health and substance use challenges amongst our young people. We MUST meet basic needs above all. Looking forward to more intentional community conversations like today’s!
