People are often curious about the name of our community development firm, Oughtness Group. I first heard the term “oughtness” from Dr. King’s 1964 Nobel Prize acceptance speech. I had been quoting this speech for years and I gradually realized that that term — Oughtness — so perfectly captured the work that I felt so called to, the work that makes me come alive. My team and I are grateful to Dr. King for so many things, including continually inspiring new generations to carry on his legacy of working for the oughtness — in ourselves, in each other, and in the world! — I accept this award today with an abiding faith in America and an audacious faith in the future of mankind. I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history. I refuse to accept the idea that the “isness” of man’s present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal “oughtness” that forever confronts him. I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsam and jetsam in the river of life, unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him. So proud to be a part of the groundbreaking work at Atlanta Urban Development Corporation (AUD)! The level of interagency coordination, investment, and innovation being undertaken in Atlanta has the potential to change the affordable housing industry. Very exciting!
