  • ???Hands-On Legal Experience with the Ohio Public Defender’s Office??? This year,?Ava Poling, a Political Science Pre-Law & Philosophy student, has had the incredible opportunity to intern with the Office of the Ohio Public Defender?in Athens, Ohio. The internship offers a hands-on approach to learning about the legal field, allowing Ava to gain valuable insights into public defense and connect with her community in meaningful ways. ?? Throughout her internship, Ava has: - Attended client meetings and sentencing hearings, - Observed legal proceedings at the Athens County Courthouse?and Municipal Court, - Worked alongside the OPD staff to support individuals in need and better understand the complexities of public defense. The welcoming and supportive environment at OPD has made this an exceptional learning experience. As a pre-law student, Ava has gained practical knowledge about legal procedures while building skills that will support her future aspirations in law. Her time at OPD has also deepened her connection to the Athens community through meaningful, impactful work. ?? Ava first heard about this opportunity through a teammate on her mock trial team, whose glowing recommendation motivated her to apply. This highlights the power of reaching out to peers, teammates, and mentors when exploring internships. Hearing firsthand about someone else’s positive experience can provide the confidence and clarity to take that first step. Ava’s experience is a great reminder that networking doesn’t have to be formal—it often starts with a simple conversation Her advice for others? “If something sounds interesting to you—do it! This is the time to experiment with different interests.”?Ava encourages students to explore their passions and take chances, even on opportunities that seem like a whim, as they might lead to transformative experiences like hers. #OhioPublicDefender #LegalInternship #PoliticalScience #PreLaw #AthensOhio #PublicDefense #CareerGrowth #HandsOnLearning

  • ?? Exciting News from Our Department Faculty! ?? We are thrilled to celebrate the upcoming release of Dr. Kirstine Taylor's groundbreaking new book, Sunbelt Capitalism and the Making of the Carceral State, set to publish in March 2025. This deeply researched and thought-provoking work examines the transformation of criminal punishment in the American South, shedding light on how the region became central to the carceral expansion of the modern United States. In Sunbelt Capitalism, Dr. Taylor explores the sweeping changes that reshaped the southern landscape, from the decline of the county chain gang to the rise of large-scale prisons, and the forces behind this carceral revolution. Through vivid storytelling and rigorous analysis, she connects pivotal historical moments—such as Brown v. Board of Education and the Black freedom movements—with the rise of Sunbelt capitalism and its profound impact on punishment systems. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in understanding the intersections of history, race, politics, and economics that have shaped the carceral state as we know it today. ?? Mark your calendars for March 2025 and pre-order your copy now through The University of Chicago Press. Let’s celebrate this incredible achievement and the valuable insights Dr. Taylor brings to this critical topic! #NewBook #PoliticalScience #CarceralState #SouthernHistory #SunbeltCapitalism

  • ?? Empowering Leadership Experience at the United Nations ?? This summer, Lily Waskiewicz had the extraordinary opportunity to attend the United Nations University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) 2024 held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. USLS gathers over 500 young leaders from around the world, inspiring them to engage in global challenges, focus on humanitarian action, and advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ?? Throughout the symposium, Lily: - Engaged in thought-provoking workshops, panels, and networking events with delegates and activists, - Gained insights from world-renowned leaders like Shomy Hasan Chowdhury (activist), Simerjeet Singh (leadership keynote), and Lek Chailert (founder of Elephant Nature Park), - Had the unique chance to converse over lunch with inspiring figures, including Amina Mohammed, Kim Solomon, and Janice Leong—an invaluable moment in her USLS journey. ?? Lily's motivation to attend USLS began when she learned about it through a friend in the OHIO Honors Program, which encouraged her to apply as a representative of Ohio University and the United States. Her selection allowed her to discuss critical issues with international delegates and participate in humanitarian initiatives that deepened her commitment to environmental and human rights law. Additionally, Lily was chosen as a Team Leader for Kindness Day, coordinating 150 delegates on an impactful volunteer trip to Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. As Team Leader, she managed logistics, led groups in ethical elephant care activities, and ensured a seamless experience for all. This leadership role gave Lily newfound confidence in her interpersonal and organizational skills. Her peers highlighted her natural abilities to lead with both confidence and composure. Her advice for anyone considering similar experiences: Embrace every aspect of it—personally and professionally. “Before traveling abroad, I think it is so important to research the country's history, system of governance, and current events. It will undoubtedly enrich your experience while there and allow you to better immerse yourself in the culture and local community.” Lily says. Remember that international experiences are not just professional but also a chance to grow, be inspired, and make memories that last a lifetime. ?? #USLS2024 #UnitedNations #GlobalLeadership #SustainableDevelopment #HumanitarianAffairs
