?? Empowering Leadership Experience at the United Nations ??
This summer, Lily Waskiewicz had the extraordinary opportunity to attend the United Nations University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) 2024 held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. USLS gathers over 500 young leaders from around the world, inspiring them to engage in global challenges, focus on humanitarian action, and advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
?? Throughout the symposium, Lily:
- Engaged in thought-provoking workshops, panels, and networking events with delegates and activists,
- Gained insights from world-renowned leaders like Shomy Hasan Chowdhury (activist), Simerjeet Singh (leadership keynote), and Lek Chailert (founder of Elephant Nature Park),
- Had the unique chance to converse over lunch with inspiring figures, including Amina Mohammed, Kim Solomon, and Janice Leong—an invaluable moment in her USLS journey.
?? Lily's motivation to attend USLS began when she learned about it through a friend in the OHIO Honors Program, which encouraged her to apply as a representative of Ohio University and the United States. Her selection allowed her to discuss critical issues with international delegates and participate in humanitarian initiatives that deepened her commitment to environmental and human rights law.
Additionally, Lily was chosen as a Team Leader for Kindness Day, coordinating 150 delegates on an impactful volunteer trip to Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. As Team Leader, she managed logistics, led groups in ethical elephant care activities, and ensured a seamless experience for all. This leadership role gave Lily newfound confidence in her interpersonal and organizational skills. Her peers highlighted her natural abilities to lead with both confidence and composure.
Her advice for anyone considering similar experiences: Embrace every aspect of it—personally and professionally. “Before traveling abroad, I think it is so important to research the country's history, system of governance, and current events. It will undoubtedly enrich your experience while there and allow you to better immerse yourself in the culture and local community.” Lily says. Remember that international experiences are not just professional but also a chance to grow, be inspired, and make memories that last a lifetime. ??
