In many ways, an orchestra without a conductor is like undergoing a capital improvement project without an owner’s representative. How? Allow us to explain. The truth is projects of all sizes – not just large ones – face similar challenges to being completed efficiently and in the owner’s true vision. Without a team dedicated to managing all these parts, the result can be chaos. Orchestrating harmony throughout project processes is the essential role of an owner’s representative, no matter the scale. Take a closer look at four main reasons why at our blog. https://conta.cc/49it4LD #OwnersRepresentative #PMCM #CapitalImprovementProjects

“There are countless passionate architects, engineers, activists, and community-builders who remain committed to building a greener world for generations to come, no matter what.” Our Sustainability Manager Maddie Woods, ENV SP, STP is right on the money – we’re lucky to work with amazing team members at Otak that put sustainability and continued learning at the top of their lists. Thanks to Maddie and Shannon Williams for representing our firm and bringing back the latest from this year’s #Greenbuild Conference!
I spent last week in Philadelphia at my first #Greenbuild conference. I am definitely still digesting my countless pages of notes, conversations and inspiration from the speakers after 4 days immersed in the conference. ? In a month that has made me and many of my peers feel uncertain, there is one thing that I am certain of: there are countless passionate architects, engineers, activists and community-builders who remain committed to building a greener world for generations to come, no matter what. Every project is an opportunity to do better, learn from our mistakes and leave something better than how we found it. ? I am excited to share more with my colleagues at Otak over the coming weeks and continue to elevate sustainable practices. Thanks for joining me Shannon Williams!

It’s generally understood that humans possess five senses, but what role do deeper perceptions play in effective collaboration? Last week, a panel at the 2024 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Conference and Expo discussed this very idea and its connection to a truly cohesive project team. Alongside Jo Wells (City of Bend) and steve ponce (Department of Administrative Services Oregon), our own Patricia Strange and Henry Alaman detailed their real-world experiences in leveraging these hidden aspects to achieve a successful owner’s representative relationship. Take a closer look at what they covered and its impact on design-build projects, at our website. https://conta.cc/3UThRLc #DesignBuild #ProjectManagement #OwnersRepresentation #PMCM

#FieldNotes: The impervious surfaces created across 36 projects of a transportation bond program required a comprehensive plan for water quality mitigation. Stretching 189 feet in length and 12-feet-wide at its base, the Sandalwood Swale is part of a design to not only exceed those requirements but also reduce flooding for the community. “With a regional approach using a swale of this size, we’re able to treat a much larger area than most while also being more cost-effective and less maintenance-intensive than designing for many smaller facilities.” Take a closer look at the approach by Karina Nordahl, PE for this water quality facility that utilizes native plants selected specifically for the area’s environmental conditions. And see its role in advancing the broader City of Tualatin stormwater master plan at our website. https://conta.cc/48s6n5u #StormwaterPlanning #Bioretention #WaterQuality #GreenInfrastructure

Colorado’s Go-Tober Challenge is officially in the books! The annual event by Denver Regional Council of Governments marks another successful year of improving regional air quality by promoting active transportation and limiting carbon emissions from commutes. With more than 205,204 non-driving miles across 78 organizations, bike trips also surpassed telework as the primary mode of transportation this year, saving $103,072 in commuting costs for participants and preventing 75 tons of carbon dioxide emissions along the way. Our Colorado teams accounted for over 400 trips, totaling more than 5,000 miles and 4,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions saved during the month. Take a closer look at the stats from our Rocky Mountain region below and learn more about the benefits of active transportation to healthy communities at our blog. https://conta.cc/4dD3pO1 #ActiveTransportation #CleanCommute

To better protect some of our most valuable natural resources, there’s a growing effort to establish standardization in the field. This was a primary focus of the Sustaining Colorado Watersheds Conference last month, that included a presentation by Otak’s Ethan Ader detailing how project data is delivering progress. Two years after its implementation, the adaptive management and monitoring in place along St. Vrain Creek is providing useful insights into meeting the challenges that come with the inevitable change inherent to natural systems design. Read more about Ethan’s presentation and the way adaptive management is helping shape the future of watersheds and aquatic habitats, at our website. https://conta.cc/4ekRtkg Organizers: Colorado Watershed Assembly | Water Education Colorado | COLORADO RIPARIAN ASSOCIATION #AdaptiveManagement #ProtectingWatersheds #StreamRestoration #FishPassage
