This time I did HMIs. Between SCADA, PLC and HMI softwares you can see the point of why systems integrators exist. Any machines you want integrated into your process have some combination of PLC and HMI. Here is the starting list of HMI OEMs, a model or series they produce and the software needed to design the application. We should just call these programmable screen but PS already stands for power supply. HMI stands for human machine interface but these are also called OIT Operator Interface Terminal, OP Operator Panel, OIP Operator Interface Panel, GT Graphical Terminal, CS Control Station; It's all the same thing. Some HMIs have drivers to connect to a lot of PLCs and some will only connect with PLCs of the same OEM. Theres a hybrid also now where the HMI touchscreen and the controller are one unit. Maybe that's my next carousel is PLC+HMI combo units and their OEMs and softwares. Then I'll do VFDs. Nikki Gonzales Weintek USA, Inc.

Tied Timebase Historian into my Home Automation this morning. Cheap Zigbee Sensors → Zigbee2MQTT → Timebase Let's give it a week or two to collect some data and see what kind of insights we can uncover. Is it overkill? Maybe...but it's fun. Plus, who doesn't want industrial-grade analytics for their living room? Maybe Ignition Maker Edition next? #MQTT #HomeAutomation #Industry40 #TimeSeries #Historian

Ask Patrick in person wether these certifications are worth it Come to OT SCADA CON www.otsacada.com
Let’s talk about certifications. A lot of people like to boast about their expertise and proficiencies, but not all are willing to actually get certified. We love having technical sales folks attend OT SCADA CON! You are doing yourself and your clients a huge favor when you train up on “adjacent” technology and processes - be an expert at your stuff and know enough to be dangerous on others. Your ability to understand your customers and point them in the right direction makes you a far more valuable partner than someone that just “sells” what you have to offer

If there's one thing I wish engineering programs did better is to expand on the opportunities in this space. Having spent many years in this field, it's clear that there's a lot more to our profession than pure technical development. We recently had a conversation with Kent who's been moving up the ranks at Inductive Automation on the sales side which clearly takes a lot more than just technical knowledge. I've certainly had a lot more visibility on these opportunities earlier in my career, so I really appreciate him giving us a glimpse of what him and his team do, and some of his insights from external colleagues. I've had this conversation with different stakeholders in our industry and the reality is such that there's no longer an excuse not to have a highly technical sales force. End-users are deploying fairly complex solutions in their facilities and they need to have the confidence that "sales people" have the knowledge, but also the soft skills to communicate to their technical staff. Would love to hear from others—how did you first learn about sales and business roles in technical industries? Was it through school, mentors, or just trial and error?
