Raising the confidence and aspirations of high school girls across Maine

关于我们

The Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute was founded in 2014 with a mission to raise the confidence and aspirations of high school girls by helping them develop the skills required to be leaders in their lives, families, careers, and communities. Prior to the program’s launch in 2015, the Institute used data to identify challenges girls face as they transition to high school. Research illustrated that girls’ self-esteem dropped 3.5 times faster than boys during this period. As a result, girls were less likely to grab hold of opportunities and to want to take the lead. Recognizing the critical need for female leaders and voices at the table, the Institute focused on the creation of programming that would increase girls’ belief in themselves, expand the perspective of what is possible for their futures, and instill the skills needed to become leaders and navigate toward success. The Institute has a statewide impact through partnerships with 36 schools across Maine’s 16 counties. These partnerships are supported not only by the schools, but also by a committed group of more than 200 trained, caring women advisors who have committed to mentoring cohorts of girls through the three-year program—rooted in the themes "My Values" (10th grade), "My Voice" (11th grade), and "My Vision" (12th grade). There are nearly 500 participants, called "Olympia's Leaders," each year. The first class graduated in 2018 and entered the Institute's Alumnae Network. Our communities are coming together and helping us lift up the next generation of leaders—and it is making a difference that is palpable today and sure to pay dividends in the future.

Presentations and pretty cookies! My co-OLA, Laura Turner, had these beautiful cookies made in celebration of our Olympia’s Leaders (OLs) completing their second year of the Olympia Snowe Women's Leadership Institute program! Our OLs created presentations to share and reflect what this past year brought. The focus was around finding, understanding, and using (or not using) their Voice. We are bursting with pride by how much they’ve developed this year and look forward to their senior year! ??

  • Thank you, Regan St Pierre for sharing this with me. As the mother of an autistic teen girl who has myriad strengths, I am grateful to know there are people like Carrie Cook in the world who can help her navigate overwhelming situations and environments, like airports, if I am not with her. If I could do anything for my autistic/disabled child, it would not be to change anything about her, or even her diagnoses. Rather, it would be to change people's mindsets to be more inclusive and welcoming; systems to be more inclusive and mindful of accommodations needed by humans; cultures to challenge stereotypes and embrace all members of society so everyone knows they belong, matter, and can thrive; the world and all its leaders to place greater value on, and resources to support and advocate for, inclusion and basic human rights. What can we do as individuals? We can look around us and the rooms we inhabit and ask ourselves who is missing at the table. Then, make time to connect with those individuals and groups and invite them to the table. And then make sure their seat fits their needs, invite them to speak/share/question, listen to their ideas/input/opinions/perspective, and include it in the programs/solutions/initiatives you are designing. #inclusion #inclusionmatters #bethechange

In the airport bathroom during a work trip and heard very distressed, loud crying and sobbing. I look around the corner to try and locate where it was coming from. There was a young girl by herself in absolute shambles. I walk up and say gently “hey…what’s going on?” She says, “I’m autistic and it’s all too much.” There are several weather delays and cancellations at the airport and she’s just truly overwhelmed by it all. I ask if I can hug her and through her tears she barely squeaks out a yes. So we just stand and hug. And now I’m crying with her because my pregnancy hormones have activated a whole new level of emotion! We begin to do some breathing exercises and after a while I ask, “how ya doing?” She says “I’m ok…I can do it.” In my mind I’m cheering, that’s right girl! So I asked her if she wants me to walk her to her gate, and she says yes. I drop her off at the gate then ask the gate agent to help make sure she’s supported. The whole exchange was less than 15 minutes but she reminded me to extend more grace. And I reflected that so much grace was extended to me in my travel as strangers kindly helped me with bags, held doors, and shared encouraging words when they saw my growing baby bump. In the hustle and bustle of the airport (and everyday life), it’s easy to let the noise take over. Especially as work piles up and we busily rush from moment to moment. It’s easy to forget our humanity. But we are all just a bunch of imperfect humans with emotions and stories, doing the best we can.

  • The Institute is now accepting applications to place more than 70 Olympia's Leaders Advisors (OLAs). OLAs are women from across Maine who volunteer to mentor, alongside a co-OLA, a group of five high school girls over a three-year term—following the structure and curriculum provided by the Institute. These OLAs will train and welcome their Olympia's Leaders over this spring and summer. Monthly meetings at partner schools will begin in September 2024. Click the link below to learn more and apply to become an OLA, or forward this to a woman in your network whom you feel would be a fit. BECOME AN OLA: https://lnkd.in/ePhd86PS
