The Ontario Seniors Nutrition & Advocacy Committee (OSNAC) & its associated working group, the Food and Nutrition Advisory Team (FNAT), are voluntary groups of Registered Dietitians and Nutrition Managers focused on advocacy initiatives for seniors’ nutrition living in Long-Term Care in Ontario. We have been collaborating directly with industry partners, including the Ministry of Long-Term Care (MLTC) over the past year, reviewing the current dietary-related regulations and making recommendations for change to support the needs of today and into the future.

#meetthemembers is back! Lian Carroll RD , brings 20 years of extensive experience as a Clinical Dietitian and Nutrition Manager in Long Term Care. As the National Nutrition Care Expert for Sienna Senior Living, Lian is committed to enhancing nutrition care processes to ensure consistent implementation while complying with current regulations and best practices. She actively participates in the Dietitians of Canada Gerontology Network and is a member of the OSNAC advocacy group. Lian recognizes and values the projected growth within the sector, and as such, has proactively established partnerships with numerous Canadian Universities. These collaborations aim to secure meaningful placement opportunities for dietetic students, providing them with invaluable hands-on experience in the field. Lian also serves as an Assessor for the College of Dietitians Quality Assurance Board. In this role, she plays a pivotal part in ensuring the ongoing competence and safety of nutrition services for all individuals across the province. In her spare time, Lian finds joy in outdoor activities, whether it's going for runs with her Australian Shepherd, exploring the open road on her motorcycle, or simply cherishing moments with her family. #seniorsnutrition #osnacfnat #advocacy

This week…Heather Stukalo Heather Stukalo has a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Nutrition from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and completed her Dietetic Internship at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. She has worked in LTC for 28 years both in corporate and clinical capacities. She has extensive knowledge in menu planning and the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI). Currently she works for Complete Purchasing Services as a Registered Dietitian on the Menu and Culinary Support Team. She has been volunteering with the Ontario Seniors Nutrition & Advocacy Committee (OSNAC) and the Food and Nutrition Advisory Team (FNAT) since March of 2022. This week on meet the members…Travis!! Travis is a graduate of Georgian College’s Culinary Management program and the Food and Nutrition Management program at Canadian Healthcare Association. Travis also completed the LTC Administrator Leadership program through Advantage Ontario. He has been an active member of the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM) for 15 years, and is a Certified Nutrition Manager. Travis’ 20+ years of food service experience in various capacities including restaurants, hotels, casinos and for the majority of his career in long-term care. Travis has been a nutrition manager in a number of long-term care facilities in Ontario and currently he is the Director of Dietary Services and Information Technology for Grove Park Home in Barrie, as well as the Program Coordinator for Georgian College’s Food and Nutrition Management program. Travis enjoys teaching and mentoring young professionals and was recently awarded the CSNM 2024 Mentor Award. As a member of OSNAC/FNAT, Travis has been responsible for managing the team’s website and ensuring the best practice documents are easily accessible for industry colleagues. At home Travis spends his free time with his wife Cassey, two daughters, dog and multiple cats. This week for #meetthemembers is Matthew Bombardier ! Matthew is a graduate of George Brown College, Chef Training and Food and Nutrition Management Program. He has also completed the Administrator Certification course with the Canadian Healthcare Association. He is a member of the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM). Matthew has worked in LTC for over 17 years starting as a Dietary Aide and Cook. Since that time, he has had many amazing opportunities being a Food and Nutrition Manager, Administrator and Dietary Consultant with Chartwell Retirement Residences, he is currently working as a Consultant for Dietary Services with AgeCare, where is helps supports the Food and Nutrition teams in 12 of the 23 LTC homes in Ontario. Matthew also is an Accreditation Surveyor with CARF International and has been Past President of Ontario Society of Nutrition Management (OSNM) and was the Ontario Representative with CSNM. In his spare time he enjoys being outdoors where he snowboards and scuba dives and of course he enjoys cooking. #seniorsnutrition #advocacy

This week on #meetthemembers we have Khashayar!! Khashayar is a Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of Ontario and he is a member of Dietitians of Canada. He has extensive years of experience in a variety of fields including management and leadership, dietetics in long-care homes, hospital, food services, sales and marketing. He holds a Bachelor Science of Nutritional Services and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He is an appointed member and chair of the “Quality Assurance Committee” at the College of Dietitians of Ontario, a member and co-chair of Seniors Nutrition and Advocacy Committee (OSNAC), a member of Professional Practice Committee at the College of Dietitians of Ontario and a member of George Brown Program Advisory Committee (PAC). Currently he is a Manager, Food & Dietetic Services with Seniors Services and Long-Term Care with the City of Toronto. In this role, he oversees all functional areas of operation within Nutrition and Food Services of ten municipally owned Long-Term Care Homes. This includes policy revision and development, and working collaboratively on a variety of initiatives to improve the quality of life, care and safety of the residents in the Homes. He also works at the Rekai Centres- Sherbourne Place as Consulting Dietitian which he assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nutritional care plans for the residents. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time outside, road trips, travelling and spending time with his family and friends. This week on #meetthemembers , Tara! After completing her Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Human Nutrition at the University of Guelph, Tara completed her Dietetic Internship at Capital District Heath Authority in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She began her career as a Clinical Dietitian for three Revera Long Term Care (LTC) Homes, eventually moving up to Provincial Dietitian. Seeking broader experience, Tara took a role as Director, Nutrition and Client Programs with Compass Group Canada. After three years in this role, Tara realized she missed working in long term care and returned to Revera as Provincial Dietitian, then National Dietitian. In 2016, Tara was promoted to her current role as National Director, Nutritional Care and Culinary Services with Revera LTC (now Extendicare). For the past 8 years, Tara has been responsible for overseeing nutritional care and culinary operations for up to 135 Long Term Care homes across Canada. Tara is a member of both Dietitians of Canada and the College of Dietitians of Ontario and has been a member of the Ontario Seniors Nutrition Advocacy Committee (previously Ontario LTC Action Group) since 2017. Tara has three children: 12-year-old Griffin and 8-year-old twins, Jaxon and Olivia. Each week we will feature a member, so you can get to know who’s involved! This week, Julie! Since getting involved in the dietetic field almost 25 years ago, Julie has strongly believed in the power of technology to solve operational problems, improve operational efficiency and create better overall food experience for seniors in care settings. After spending the last decade leading long term care systems for a large senior care chain, she is now working at MealSuite as the Director of Partner Relations. Julie continues to advocate and drive quality in senior's dining and nutrition care through the OSNAC –FNAT Committees, as a Director on the Dietitians of Canada Board of Directors, and as a the nutrition care subject matter expert on the Ontario Geriatric Long Term Care Review Committee. Julie's main priority has been to improve the resident dining experience and nutrition status in senior's care throughout her career.
