The flaw stemmed from vulnerabilities in the Attended Sysupgrade service, which builds custom firmware based on user input. ?? The first issue was a command injection vulnerability in the server’s image build process. By exploiting a flaw in the Makefile handling, attackers could execute arbitrary commands inside a containerized environment. While the container was isolated, this provided a foothold to potentially escape containment and execute broader attacks. ?? The second issue involved a SHA-256 hash collision due to hash truncation. The service truncated the SHA-256 hash to 12 characters, drastically reducing its uniqueness and making collisions feasible. By brute-forcing hash collisions, attackers could manipulate the server to deliver malicious firmware to legitimate requests. ??? Security engineer RyotaK identified these issues while testing the sysupgrade.openwrt.org service, showcasing how critical oversights in hashing and input validation can lead to severe exploits. Using Hashcat, they generated a payload with a matching hash to legitimate firmware, allowing the execution of a malicious script. ???
