?? Personal liability is on the table for GDPR violations! Penalties aren't there to earn ?? for regulators--they're supposed to change behavior. And while fines for companies can be persuasive, fines for the individuals in charge of those companies tend to get more attention. Technology and Data Privacy Lawyer Olivia Ward of Simmons & Simmons discussed this and other trends in the EU privacy world in our recent webinar. Check the comments for the on-demand recording!

"Privacy assessments"—To non-privacy pros, the term might not evoke a lot of feelings. But if you've wrangled with assessments before, you might have a LOT of feelings about them. ?? Frustration. Confusion. Maybe even resolve. ...but probably not unmitigated joy. Just because every jurisdiction has its own set of requirements, best practices, and triggers for assessments doesn't mean they need to be a confusing slog to manage. Join us on April 10th and learn how to inject clarity into your assessment practices! ?????? https://pvcy.me/43niJgm

?? Personal data doesn’t get much more personal than this: 23andMe’s recent bankruptcy filing could mean that customers’ genetic data will be sold to the highest bidder. ?? But what about HIPAA? ? Unfortunately, HIPAA doesn’t apply here. Consumers giving health data to a technology company like 23andMe aren’t protected in the same way a patient working with a health organization would be. ??What to do next!? If you’ve given your data to 23andMe, your next steps will depend on where you live. ?? If you're protected by a comprehensive privacy law or law regarding health data shared with a non-health organization, submit a subject rights request to 23andMe asking them to delete your data. If you’re not covered by a data privacy law, 23andMe will retain a copy of your data even if you delete your account. Regardless of where you live, we recommend you:? ? Delete your data? ?? Request that your saliva sample be destroyed? ?? Revoke any permissions given to use your genetic information for research Check out the California Attorney General’s Press Release for more information on next steps.?
