As a benefits broker, you would think I would know better. A couple of months ago, my wife landed wrong coming off the last step and her ankle started swelling up something fierce. With it being late on a Sunday, and knowing it was more than a twist, we were trying to figure out the best place to go. Ended up going to a free-standing ER close to our house (shame, I know). After spending 4 hours waiting, we were finally called back. After some X-rays and a few minutes with a doctor, they said it was a bad sprain and the new medical recommendations were to continue to put pressure on it. (A bit surprising, but doctors know best.) After a few weeks, things had not gotten better, but progressively worse. She got in to see an ortho and found that she had actually torn every ligament in her ankle and needed to be in a boot for about 8 weeks. The ER is a great place when it is a true emergency and you need a diagnosis and treatment. However, those doctors are not specialists and also deal with a host of serious issues within a short span of time. They are heroes if you ask me. Had I thought about it a bit more, we could have started out at a place like OS1 Orthopedic & Sports Injury Clinic for walk-in X-Rays & MRIs. We would not have had to spend 4 hours waiting, and wouldn't have had to come out of pocket nearly as much. Unnecessary ER visits are a claims killer, but they also are an opportunity to generate savings within a year. Education and plan design steerage are effective ways to encourage employees to seek alternate care first. Saves the employee money out of pocket, but also helps the plan overall. Let me be clear though, if it is an emergency, go to the ER.
