Everywhere I look, tenacious educators are driving change, pushing boundaries, and inspiring those around them to do the same. At IMSE, we call them Reader Leaders — because they are the ones leading literacy transformation in their schools and communities. One of those incredible people is Sandra Rodriguez-Gomez, Assistant Superintendent of Schools at HOBOKEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Sandra has been a champion for literacy for years, ensuring that every educator in her district is equipped with the right tools, training, and support they need to help ALL students learn to read. You may have heard that the latest NAEP results show a continued decline in reading scores nationally. Fourth and eighth graders, on average, scored two points lower than in 2022 and five points lower than in 2019. These numbers confirm what educators already know—we are in a literacy crisis, and immediate action is needed. At IMSE, we understand that real results take time. Strong foundational literacy skills don’t appear overnight — they require evidence-based instruction, expert training, and ongoing support.
