Ortho Summit

Sometimes you get what you need and didn’t even know it. I needed some real practical tips to improve patient care and delivery, an update on a few robotic and enabling technology questions, and most importantly I needed a couple nights to unplug and hang out with some good friends. This weekend I got to teach and learn with my collegues. What a great course Ortho Summit The course stands out because it allows cross pollination between orthopedic specialities. I had the opportunity to learn from business leaders and spine surgeons; hard to find these opportunities at other meetings. It is always great to see mentors from the past as well. Thank you Kevin Plancher, MD, MPH, FAOA, FAAOS and oset team for allowing me to participate.

I had a pinch-me moment getting to deliver the keynote speech at the OSET conference in front of some of the world’s best healthcare professionals…who were all wearing FIGS. My co-founder Heather Hasson and I started out by selling scrubs out of the back of her car — showing up at shift changes and serving coffee to start conversations with HCPs. All we wanted to do was be around and serve the most Awesome Humans in the world! Fast forward more than a decade later and it was deeply emotional for me to speak at such a premiere event filled with Awesome Humans everywhere. I spoke a bit about the risk of being an entrepreneur. Founders often talk about how creating a startup is like staring into the abyss while eating glass. It certainly felt like that as investor after investor passed on writing checks to us – two young women – and as we obsessed over every small detail in trying to perfect the products and experience that we were offering. But despite what I may have thought, I was not actually staring into the abyss. I was not actually eating glass. And even as I cashed out my 401(k) and left a great job on Wall Street to take a chance on FIGS, the risks I was taking do not hold a candle to the risks our Awesome Humans take every day. The Awesome Humans at this conference – like all of our Awesome Humans – truly represent what it means to stare into the abyss and take risks. The weight you carry on your shoulders every day is something that almost no one else in the world experiences, certainly not me. You are responsible for taking broken bodies and making them whole again. Your patient’s livelihood…and often their life itself…is in your hands. There is no margin of error. And you do all this in a healthcare system that too often does not support you and that adds to your stress, rather than reduces it.? Despite all these challenges, there is no one more optimistic and hopeful than our Awesome Humans. No one is making a bigger difference or solving bigger problems. You all show up every day, determined to learn, to improve, to innovate, to inspire, and to win. And you do. You are the ultimate entrepreneurs and the ultimate risk-takers. Thank you to Kevin Plancher, MD, MPH, FAOA, FAAOS, Betsy Grunch, MD, Beth Best and the whole Ortho Summit team for allowing me to be inspired by everyone who attended this incredible conference! I will never forget it.
