Kathy faced worsening knee pain due to osteoarthritis, which impacted her ability to enjoy activities like biking, gardening and hiking. At 82 years old, Karla Cummins was in a severe car accident that left her with a fractured spine. To make matters worse, a previous unsuccessful surgery left her with a curved spine and persistent pain. In her recent Indianapolis Monthly Top Docs feature, OrthoIndy's hand and upper extremity surgeon Dr. Christy Kellams had one piece of advice for her patients: Put your phone down! "The amount of time we spend in front of our smart devices can cause a lot of problems. It affects posture—you’re bending over.
