Been thinking about the relationship between service and product. It seems like many people draw a line between these two and think you're either a product-based company or a service-based company. But I'm wondering if it's that cut and dry. Much of what we do at Orpical starts with service and ends with delivering a fully developed product, but then that product gets shipped, looping back into providing a service. I believe wholeheartedly that products are a byproduct of people.?So, if that's the case, isn't product development just a service to develop people? It's kind of ugly, but we are contracted to deliver a service as a professional service provider. (Yes, team. I'll put a $1 in the swear jar for using the c-word.) The service we agree to provide ultimately entails some form of product development. But the more I think about it, we are agreeing to help develop the people behind the product. To give them back their time. To provide a utility. To serve an audience that they are passionate about. That's pathway paving for human potential at its finest. And that sounds a hell of a lot a hell of a lot sexier than product development, doesn't it? It might be semantics, but it's the truth. Every product tells a story. It goes beyond just technology and design. It goes to the people behind it... their challenges... their creativity... their dreams... The more I think about it: the real goal for service-based businesses needs to be to do whatever it takes to enable clients to produce more, whatever production means to that individual. That's real service. That's key for survival where almost all service components are being rapidly commoditized through technology. If not, you're just building empty containers to nowhere. The more you can connect to the person you serve and the product they need your help to build, the more you elevate a transactional relationship into a transformative journey. The more you become invested in the story and the outcome.
