Many editorial office and peer review management professionals, while brilliant wordsmiths, are notoriously averse to using statistics. However, reporting of key performance indicators is part of the job, especially when compiling annual, quarterly or editorial board meeting reports. A common issue that massively undermines the utility of such reports is that too often editorial offices just report key indicators, especially related to turnaround time, as individual values without additional information such as the measures of variance (spread of data). Sherrie Hill and Jason Roberts contributed an article in ISMTE Headquarters Editorial Office News in 2022 on this very topic, outlining the problems this can cause when interpreting results. https://ow.ly/2tAG50TWIO2 Simply put, just stating that turnaround time to first decision was a median of 35 days does not actually tell us a huge amount of information, even when comparing that value to past performance. Instead, the Interquartile Range should be reported for medians and the Standard Deviation for means. It would also make sense to report the number (n) of data points considered and the range from the maximum value to the minimum. Why bother? The measure of variance can reveal the consistency of performance. For instance, Year 1 and Year 2 may both have had a mean turnaround time of, say, 40 days. But if the Standard Deviation in Year 2 is much smaller, that means that the journal probably processed manuscripts more consistently and/or was able to keep control of manuscripts that started to run late (and thus become extreme outliers). My point: it is important to not just report the speed of turnaround, but also the consistency of turnaround time to gain a richer understanding of performance. The spread of data can tell us a lot about performance consistency. Measures of variance can be easily calculated using Excel and there are a million YouTube videos with guidance on how to do that. Origin Reports, Origin’s reporting tool designed for editorial offices, can also take the strain for you, pushing out those additional statistics in seconds.
