Oriens is launching a?three-part lecture series in Prague called?Mercator Lectures. The Trump presidency marks the beginning of a new era in world politics. The Mercator Lectures will explore the key areas and channels of change to provide a compass for navigating this new playing field, connecting world affairs with their business implications and highlighting their relevance to the Czech Republic. The first lecture on 20 February 2025 will focus on the transformation of US politics and its impact on both US and European businesses. The EU is losing ground to China domestically and around the world China distinctly dominates trade with emerging countries. According to a recent report, Chinese trade with developing countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa has increased by almost 50% since 2019. Not only does this put the Chinese ahead of the US and EU, but they also seem to be expanding at the expense of the EU: as the EU's share has declined, the Chinese have increased their role in emerging regions. The European industry has plenty of reasons to fear China, as not only is it being squeezed out of more and more European markets, but it is doing the same in the global market. However, Europe's leading economies can't put aside their short-term considerations regarding stopping the Chinese takeover.

Join our next event in Prague: Krisztian Orban will deliver a lecture on April 19, Friday from 7PM: Why is it so hard to catch up with Germany? Even though many tried, very few countries have managed to catch up with the richest countries in the past 100 years. While several dozens of countries have risen from poor to the middle-income category, the emergence almost always stops there. There is even a popular term called the middle-income trap to highlight the inherent difficulties in becoming a truly wealthy country.
