As a NEDA Proficient End-of-Life Doula and NEDA Member, we are immensely grateful to the National End of Life Doula Alliance for identifying our set of standards to uphold as End-of-Life Doulas; inclusive of the model of care, scope of practice, code of ethics, earning proficiency badges & certification, and connecting EOL Doulas with one another. NEDA is also an educational resource to the general public to understand how an EOL Doula is supportive to individuals and families facing the end of life. Decades later after her death, I’m proud to weave her aspirations into the fabric of my own journey. Legacy isn’t defined by titles or financial success alone. It’s in the moments we shared, the love we gave, the laughter we shared, and the way we showed up for others. It’s how we live, how we love, and what we stand for. Let’s honor those who had dreams they didn’t get to experience by living our lives with intention and purpose, carrying their hopes forward in the way we show up each day. We were honored to have the opportunity to share our experience as a hospice volunteer at Hearth Hospice! In this different role that compliments our work in the end-of-life doula field, our time and work with hospice is incredibly valuable to deepening our experience and how to best support others with diverse needs. When someone you care about is going through a tough time - whether it's grief, illness, or any life challenge - one of the most powerful things you can do is "hold space" for them. Holding space is about being present without judgment. It's listening without trying to fix. It's acknowledging their pain without minimizing it. It's allowing them to feel what they feel, without rushing them to "get over it." When we hold space, we: ??Offer a safe environment ??Show that their feelings are valid ??Provide comfort through our presence ??Allow them to process at their own pace Remember, you don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes just being there is the greatest gift you can give. Next time someone you know is struggling, try holding space. ??Realistic Positivity vs Forced Optimism?? Humans want to be positive because that’s what gives us hope and a light at the end of the tunnel. Positivity is a powerful tool that gives us a little more stability in the unknown. I like realistic positivity because we SHOULD promote this in our interactions - while equally not denying someone’s reality of their diagnosis. We can be both realistically positive while not forcing optimism when it’s not needed ??
