One main reason is that palliative care is designed to address the needs of the chronically ill, not just the terminally ill. Palliative care aims to make patients comfortable through the relief of pain and help them with the acceptance of life’s natural processes. Healthcare delivery systems look to palliative care programs to help increase the quality of care provided while also driving down costs of care. As part of the continuum of care, the palliative care model incorporates a multidisciplinary team approach that includes health professionals and family members to focus on the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients. Palliative care encourages a radical shift from the traditional delivery of prolonged, unnecessary medical treatment to providing patients with care centered on quality of life. This program will address palliative care and its impact on the quality and cost issues central to healthcare reform.

At last week’s Oregon ACHE Fall Conference I was honored to be presented with the Regent’s Senior Executive Award by Oregon’s Regent, Dr. Jane Russell. Thank you Dr. Russell for the honor - and to the Oregon Chapter for all that you do and for being all who you are. And congratulations again to Heidi May-Stoulil who received the Regent’s Early Careerist Award. ?? It has been a privilege to serve as Oregon ACHE President these past two years and as I wind down my term and hand off the reins to President-Elect Wing K. Chan, MHA, FACHE, I am reflecting on all the Chapter has accomplished. I am so proud of all that we have done together. Thank you to Madesyn Derrick for being my partner in transformation. ???? You know, I wouldn’t even have been a member of ACHE if it had not been for the positive influence of coaches and mentors along the way. Thank you to past Army-Baylor grad and VA colleague Megan Davis-Scott for telling me about the Army-Baylor program and helping me apply. Thank you to then Portland VA Interim Director David Stockwell (another A-B Alum) for sending me to the Army-Baylor Program all those years ago, when I made the pivot from working as a biomedical repair professional to seeking a healthcare leadership track. Thank you to Lee Bewley, Mark Bonica, PHD, Mishaw T. Cuyler, Ph.D., Brad Beauvais MBA, PhD, FACHE, Linda W. Fisher, Larry Johnson, PhD, LFACHE, and Dr. A. David Mangelsdorff - and ALL the professors and faculty at Army-Baylor who encouraged us to get involved with ACHE. I became a member that first month (June 2013) and started attending events. It has made all the difference. “Sic’em, Bears!” ?? And thank you to my preceptor and coach mentor - Joanne Krumberger, FACHE, who has always been so supportive and who remains a friend. Lastly, thank you to all the Oregon Chapter leaders who welcomed me to the Chapter when I returned to Oregon from Texas - and who empowered to be a part of leadership. Thank you Win Howard, FACHE, Marty Cahill MBA, FACHE, Joe Yoder, FACHE, and Sally Cheyne (sheen) for putting me to work! ?? It has been hard but even more rewarding to work together with all of you and our Board as we sought to navigate COVID, modernize, and grow. Looking forward to serving out my term and sticking around at the meetings as the Immediate-Past Prez. ?? Thank you to everyone who came out today and made the Oregon Chapter of ACHE’s 2024 Fall Conference such an amazing day! Over 70 attendees gathered in Newport today for a day of learning, connecting, and celebrating. Oregon ACHE's Regent, Dr. Jane Russell, presented the Early Careerist Regent Award Heidi May-Stoulil and the Senior Executive Regent Award to outgoing Chapter President, Valdez Bravo, FACHE. Incoming Chapter President, Wing K. Chan, MHA, FACHE shared ways for members to get involved with the chapter via service on a committee - or helping serve as a moderator or panelist on a future session! The day featured 3.0 Face-to-Face CEUs of learning across two dynamic presentations on financial stability and successful change management techniques. Thank you to the morning moderator, Don Briones, from coming up from Northern California to lead the comprehensive panel discussion on financial stability featuring the talent and perspectives of Grayson Bly, CPA, Miranda Miller, Ursula Marinelli, and Marty Cahill MBA, FACHE. An excellent discussion looking at ways to create more sustainable financial organizations and topics such as value-based care, telehealth, AI, foundations, and partnering with community-based organizations all were front and center. Thank you to the afternoon moderator, Katie Dobler, for leading a dynamic panel discussion on how to successfully lead change in healthcare organizations featuring the talent and perspectives of Lauren Cole, MS-ID, EDAC, Associate IIDA, Katie Sypher, RD, MBA, and Joy N. White, DNP Candidate, MSN, MBA, WHNP, PMHNP. Another powerful and inspiring discussion jam packed with concepts, cautionary tales, lessons learned, tools, and approaches to successfully doing the very hard work of leading people through change, whether that change is driven by internal or outside forces. Last but not least it was exciting to announce the new additions to the Oregon ACHE Board!
