Recently, seven adults in custody completed a 12-week Music Theory class at Snake River Correctional Institution! This introductory course covered interval theory, music notation, scales, chords, rhythm, melody, harmony, and song structure—all applied to the guitar. Beyond learning the technical aspects, participants gained a creative outlet for self-expression, emotional processing, and social connection. At Snake River, we believe that music can be a powerful tool for rehabilitation, helping to create a positive and constructive environment within the institution. Congratulations to the graduates! #DOC #SRCI #Ontario #Oregon #MusicMatters #RehabilitationThroughMusic #SnakeRiverCI #LifelongLearning

The eggs and bears are back at Parenting Inside Out at the Oregon State Penitentiary! The Egg Baby Challenge gives AIC parents a hands-on way to practice responsibility, patience, and care—24/7 for an entire week. If they successfully keep their fragile egg safe, they graduate to caring for a teddy bear, reinforcing the dedication it takes to nurture an infant. It’s more than just an exercise—it’s a powerful lesson in parenting. #DOC #ParentingInsideOut #BuildingSkills #EggBabyChallenge #ResponsibleParenting #OregonStatePenitentiary #OSP #Salem #Oregon

In today’s always-connected world, taking time to unplug can be a powerful act of self-care. National Day of Unplugging encourages us to step away from screens, social media, and digital distractions to focus on real-world connections and mindfulness. In a high-stress environment like corrections, where constant alerts and demands can be overwhelming, setting boundaries with technology—even if just for a short period—can help reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance focus. Take a moment to consider where you can reduce screen time—whether it’s putting devices away briefly, engaging in more face-to-face interactions, or simply enjoying a moment of quiet reflection.
