Every day, AICs in our programs are gaining real-world experience, learning valuable skills, and preparing for careers beyond incarceration. Just how skilled are the people in OCE Programs? The photos in this post highlight one of the many incredible transformations made possible by the skilled hands in our programs. What started as just a truck cab and chassis is now a fully completed tow truck—complete with a hydraulic system, flatbed installation, marker lights, toolboxes, and every essential component needed for the job. This project is a testament to the expertise, dedication, and craftsmanship of the individuals training in our programs. They are learning hands-on, industry-relevant skills that translate directly to opportunities in the workforce. Career Technical Education isn’t just about learning—it’s about building futures. ?? OCE Film Study Class #5 Recap ?? We’re now five classes into our 12-month OCE Film Study course, led by Devin Fei-Fan Tau from No Sunrise Wasted, and the learning process continues to evolve! In our latest session, we reviewed cinematography homework and identified a key takeaway—our AIC students need more hands-on time with the camera. We’re exploring ways to make that happen so they can better practice their techniques. To keep progressing, we shifted the discussion to composition and its connection to graphic design—an area where many already have experience. Making that connection is boosting their confidence and helping them see how their existing skills apply to filmmaking. We’re excited to see how these concepts come to life in future projects! ?? Building Skills for Success: NCCER Training in Action ?? February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, a time to recognize the power of hands-on learning and workforce development. Last week, I had the opportunity to observe our NCCER Core class in action—where training goes beyond theory and is directly applied to the equipment, products, and processes used daily in the OCE Metal Shop and OCE Furniture Factory at OSP. Facilitated by AIC peer instructors, this skills-based training encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and real-world application. Participants didn’t just learn—they engaged, shared best practices, and reinforced critical workplace skills like precision, efficiency, and safety. What stood out most? The reciprocal learning—as instructors guided the class, they also gained new insights from their peers, proving that experience-driven education benefits everyone. Bridging the Gap: Work Release at WCCF For the first time in over 25 years, Oregon Department of Corrections and OCE have launched a work release program at Warner Creek Correctional Facility, giving AICs hands-on job experience before release.
