?? Empowering Public Services with Agile & Human-Centered Design
Last week, I had the privilege of presenting to the Oregon Agile Community of Practice on a topic that fuels my passion: leveraging Agile and Human-Centered Design (HCD) to transform public services. While I’ve been reflecting?on these ideas for several years, it was the first time that I’ve shared some of these perspectives.
?? Key Insight:
By embracing iterative solutions and centering our work around real people, we can align public services with the evolving needs of our communities, making government more responsive and equitable.
HCD in Action:
? Civilla's Project Re:form truly underscores the transformational power of design and the importance of storytelling. Their work with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to redesign its 40-page benefits is truly inspirational - https://lnkd.in/e9uVYWNF
?? Acknowledgements:
Special appreciation to Jennifer Pahlka, for all her work and in giving voice to many of the “barriers” experience by public servants in Recoding America. Special thanks to Tara McGuinness and Hana Raviyt Schank for their work in Power to the Public—both in defining the evolving field of Public Interest Technology (PIT), helping me navigate the CivicTech ecosystem, and for their generosity in speaking with me. Additionally, I want to acknowledge the work critical work the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation, InnovateUS, IDEO, Ad Hoc LLC, McKinsey & Company and the members of the Digital Services Coalition. Your innovative and impactful work continues to inspire and guide our community toward meaningful change.
?? Our Vision: A Collaborative, Open-Source Toolkit
Looking ahead we're aiming to create a flexible, iterative, and open-source public sector toolkit that brings together Agile, HCD, and public sector innovation guidance and resources. Building on the work of others and helping others navigate the field, the toolkit will offer real-world guidance and resources, empowering teams across Oregon—and beyond—to implement these principles effectively.
Continuing the Conversation:
I'm excited about the possibilities ahead and would love to hear your thoughts:
-?????????How have Agile or HCD methodologies influenced your approach to public service?
-?????????What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Thank you to everyone who joined the presentation. Together, we're paving the way for a new era of public sector innovation.
