At Christmas, ask Who's Wally? Not Where's Wally? Etsy's new ad is so brilliant. System1 has tested Etsy's global Christmas campaign, and damn, it's a great ad, but the strategy is also very smart. There are a lot of entertaining, story-rich ads. This is one of them. We've tested 200+ Etsy ads globally, and this is the highest scoring for our predicted long-term creative metric! 4.9 Star Rating. It uses the peak-end effect, creating sadness that is corrected at the end. Viewers will be left thinking about the peak end for a while. What you see less in Christmas campaigns is consistent multi-year strategy and differentiation. Etsy's positioning is clear - you can find that niche thing that nowhere else will have. At Christmas, that means finding that perfect gift for a loved one. Brilliant. I was on Etsy yesterday trying to do exactly that, getting something niche for that special someone. A product truth laddered up into something emotional over years. Great marketing.
