Celebrating One Year of ORCA: Reflections and Next Steps On February 1, 2024, the Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA) launched with a mission to make science more engaging, accessible, and actionable. Over the past year– thanks to incredible engagement and collaboration across disciplines, geographies, and sectors– we have nurtured creative, get-stuff-done coalitions. Together, we are working to tackle the systems-level challenges that are impeding the adoption of a more open, collaborative, inclusive, efficient, evidence-driven, and trustworthy approach to research. Within this spirit, we are excited to share our First Annual Letter, reflecting on what we’ve learned and what’s ahead. ?? We’re excited to announce that the Catalytic Awards Program is now live! With support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA) is offering grants of up to $15,000 for future-looking projects promoting open scholarship, open science, inclusivity, and innovation. This program is designed for U.S.-based, non-R1, and traditionally under-resourced institutions. Awarded projects may include community engagement, capacity-building, and innovative networking activities to advance a culture of openness in research. ORCA will provide access to mentorship from seasoned practitioners, as well as guidance in project management and impact evaluation. The program also includes a community of practice model, fostering a supportive environment where award recipients can share experiences, network, and learn from one another. ?? The call for participants to the Open Science "Dynamic Convergence" Workshop is now open. The Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA) is organizing the event, in collaboration with CERN and UNESCO and with the participation of NASA and the National Science Foundation.? It will take place on 18th and 19th September 2024 in Washington, DC. The workshop will bring together researchers, students, policymakers, funders, and other key actors to highlight impactful open science activities, explore collaboration opportunities, and find practical ways to speed up the global adoption of open science. More information about the program and logistics will be shared shortly. We aim to bring together an inclusive mix of participants spanning geographies, career stages, and disciplines. Thanks to generous support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Templeton World Charity Foundation, we are able to subsidize some travel costs for eligible applicants.
