The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. In this powerful new work, theologian James H. Cone explores these symbols and their interconnection in the history and souls of black folk. Both the cross and the lynching tree represent the worst in human beings and at the same time a thirst for life that refuses to let the worst determine our final meaning. While the lynching tree symbolized white power and black death, the cross symbolizes divine power and black life God overcoming the power of sin and death. For African Americans, the image of Jesus, hung on a tree to die, powerfully grounded their faith that God was with them, even in the suffering of the lynching era. https://lnkd.in/eSaEaB9b #jamescone #blacklivesmatter #blm #lynching #racism #race #africanamericans

Clergy abuse survivor Mark Joseph Williams shares his personal journey of spiraling into substance abuse and shame in the agonizing aftermath of trauma. Hitting rock bottom, he encountered healing in the place few survivors would look—the Catholic Church. There, despite and beyond clergy abuse and power plays of the hierarchy, he rediscovered new life within the sacraments and the mystery of the cross. Now, with his unique perspective as a victim seeking redemption, he counsels both victims of clergy abuse as well as faith leaders invested in transforming a broken church. https://lnkd.in/efAsuhNw

Two friends, one a Christian theologian, the other a Buddhist-Christian theologian, explore how a conversation between Christians and Buddhists can clarify and support a spirituality that is experientially real (mystical) as well as socially engaged (prophetic). From basic questions about Buddha and Jesus who were they? What did they teach? Paul Knitter and Roger Haight explore Buddhist and Christian notions about ultimate reality, human nature, spiritual practice, and the question of work for peace and social transformation. They also address the nature of interreligious dialogue and the possibilities of religious double belonging (is it possible? dangerous? necessary?). https://lnkd.in/e-8_NwNM #jesus #buddah #religion #theology #buddhist #christians #spirituality #paulknitter #rogerhaight

Leonardo Boff, one of the original pioneers of Liberation Theology, has written many books on Jesus and Christology in a career of over fifty years. In this new title he presents a short synthesis of that work, arguing that the essential foundation of Jesus’s identity and mission comes from his intimate identification with God, whom he calls affectionately his Abba. At what point did this mysterious and intimate feeling become fully conscious in Jesus’s own life? How did it produce in him a true inner revolution, a change of life, inaugurating a new language, and a new practice, and enabling him to act as one who takes the place of God? In attempting to answer these questions, Boff finds a new way to explore the spirituality of Jesus, his mission, and the meaning of discipleship today. https://lnkd.in/esjb5M2f #leonardoboff #god #liberationtheology #christology
