Propelling the small satellite revolution
关于我们
Orbion Space Technology is an AS-9100 certified production company that develops and manufactures revolutionary plasma propulsion systems for small satellites. Because of their fuel efficiency, Orbion’s thrusters can save spacecraft operators millions of dollars in operating costs while increasing the value of the spacecraft’s data products. Orbion has a novel manufacturing approach that enables production of plasma thrusters at the unprecedentedly high rates that are required to equip the space revolution. More than 10,000 small satellites will be launched within the next few years. These satellites will perform big data missions such as providing wireless global internet and recording detailed images of anywhere on the Earth’s surface every hour. Each of these satellites will need its own thruster, or thrusters, to maneuver in space, counteract drag, and execute a controlled re-entry at the end of the mission to avoid populating space with junk.

"... it's not that hard to build one Hall-effect thruster in the lab, what's really, really hard is to build one that can fly in orbit, and then build hundreds of them that are exactly the same." An interview with CEO Lyon (Brad) King on N2K | T-Minus. Thanks to Maria Varmazis and her team for covering everything from Orbion's origin story to the future of electric propulsion. https://lnkd.in/gtMfbGPq - (interview starts at 0:09:00) #Orbion #Innovation #Aerospace #SpaceNerds #SmallSat

Orbion is a proud sponsor of Michigan's CopperDog 150 dogsled race and we were thrilled to have JR Anderson cross the finish line wearing our bib. And because you probably have been losing sleep wondering how the propulsive capability of a sled dog compares to that of the Orbion Aurora Hall-effect plasma thruster - we have done the math for you: A sled dog can burn up to 10,000 kilocalories per 24-hour day while it runs more than 100 miles. 10,000 kilocalories of dog kibble contains 41,000,000 Joules of energy. The Orbion Aurora thruster requires 300 W of power, so 41,000,000 Joules would power Aurora for 137,000 seconds, or 38 hours. The Aurora thruster is thus 38/24 = 1.583x more fuel efficient than a sled dog. QED. Stay tuned for the next lecture when we compare the storage density of kibble to xenon. (Spoiler: xenon is better). #mushing #dogsled #orbion #spacenerds

When a satellite is deployed in space, it needs to move to its specific orbit, it needs to occasionally adjust its position in that orbit, avoid collisions, and eventually de-orbit and self-destruct. We provide that ability to move, and we do it with technology called a Hall-effect thruster (HET). Learn more about HETs, and how we're disrupting the industry with cost effective, reliable, high performance thrusters. https://lnkd.in/gNBr-vhY (Graphic Render by General Atomics) #Orbion #SpaceNerds #NewSpace #SmallSat #Aerospace #HallEffect #ElectricPropulsion #Satellite #HoustonWeGotThis
