The mobility landscape has gotten much more multifaceted and we're excited to be pushing the boundaries of using the right type of mobility to address the right use case. We also have relished the challenge of finding processing that adds value and diverts materials from landfills. And, what if we combined those two challenges? Introducing Penny Pickup by Orange Sparkle Ball - a platform where autonomous and micromobility solutions can be hailed for specific material and waste product types, and redistributed to the most sustainable processing destination to ensure their proper reuse, recycling, refurbishment, and redistribution. Orange Sparkle Ball will utilize Penny Pickup for three upcoming pilots in Detroit, focused on the pickup of food waste, e-waste, and hard to recycle plastics. This work was catalyzed by a Real World Deployment Grant from the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. And, the Office of Mobility Innovation at The City of Detroit has been instrumental in supporting this work. Thank you to both teams! As our work progresses, we'll be looking for more pilot partners. Message us if interested. And, read more about how we are building and testing the platform here: https://lnkd.in/ei_jcF-r #pennypickup #detroitroboticpickup #circulareconomy #mobility #detroit

Another demo in the books! Orange Sparkle Ball, Inc. was honored to present our Autonomous Robotic Pickup Platform, Penny Pickup, for Detroit Month of Design (DMOD) during the first week of festivities. As part of the first-ever Mobility track, it was an honor to showcase Penny Pickup, our Autonomous Robotic Pickup Platform, currently being piloted in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Through a live demo, we explored the potential of autonomous vehicles and highlighted the open innovation frameworks and human-centered design driving platform. Big thanks to Refraction AI and Intermode for partnering with us to bring this vision to life! Global Epicenter of Mobility (GEM) is working with local community and industry partners to co-create the future of inclusive mobility development through facilitated pilots that turn research into action by partnering members of the mobility ecosystem to work together on new opportunities. These projects were identified using the results of the network analysis performed by GEM and our team at Orange Sparkle Ball, Inc. earlier this year. Recently, Design Core Detroit and Detroit Regional Partnership (DRP) partnered to facilitate a co-creation session at the GEM quarterly meeting. Attendees were asked to select from multiple options what “Mobility for All” most looks like to them. Options ranged from robust car-based infrastructure to rail-based transportation options, accessible autonomous vehicle systems, and amplifying community voice in mobility development. Respondents showed a great preference for amplification of community voice as well as infrastructure reducing the role of cars in Detroit’s mobility ecosystem. These insights will be used to guide the development of future mobility initiatives to ensure their alignment with community needs and interests. Stay tuned for additional project updates as the facilitated pilots continue! #mobility #urbanmobility #futureofmobility #inclusivemobility

"We are surrounded by technology tools - whether that’s in OSB’s work piloting new technologies or as Alexa keeps up with our music playlists. So, I welcomed the chance to talk to designers about what they can uniquely bring to their work, that technology can not." — Ashley Touchton In October of last year Orange Sparkle Ball’s Ashley Touchton was invited to speak to UCDA's Conference attendees about the unique role designers continue to play, despite the rapidly evolving technology landscape. We believe in actively participating in the innovation ecosystem and pushing the discussion as thought partners. We consistently engage as speakers, panelists, reviewers and mentors with innovation industry leaders, the impact and public health community, the economic development community, and with schools and universities. We believe in participating widely, sharing our knowledge and expertise, spurring new ideas and consistently learning from these engagements. 2023 saw us giving talks, writing articles, or participating as invited reviewers 43 times. While researching mobility trends for current and future projects at Orange Sparkle Ball, we came across a compelling study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Boston University that highlights a new dimension of retail strategy—Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations as a driver of consumer foot traffic. The research, which analyzed the impact of Tesla Supercharger installations across nearly 3,000 US counties, found that retailers located within 150 meters of these chargers experienced a 4% increase in monthly visits. Key Insights: - Proximity Matters: Retailers within 150 meters of a Tesla Supercharger saw the most significant traffic boost. - First-Mover Advantage: The benefits were most pronounced when the charger was among the first in the county. - Retailer Incentives: With evidence of increased foot traffic and spending, retailers have a strong case for investing in or hosting EV charging infrastructure. This research aligns with Orange Sparkle Ball’s focus on growing and supporting the mobility ecosystems and community innovation. As we continue to explore and support the integration of mobility solutions, it’s clear that strategic partnerships between retail establishments and EV charging networks can not only foster sustainability but also unlock new revenue streams through increased consumer engagement.
