The mobility landscape has gotten much more multifaceted and we're excited to be pushing the boundaries of using the right type of mobility to address the right use case. We also have relished the challenge of finding processing that adds value and diverts materials from landfills. And, what if we combined those two challenges? Introducing Penny Pickup by Orange Sparkle Ball - a platform where autonomous and micromobility solutions can be hailed for specific material and waste product types, and redistributed to the most sustainable processing destination to ensure their proper reuse, recycling, refurbishment, and redistribution. Orange Sparkle Ball will utilize Penny Pickup for three upcoming pilots in Detroit, focused on the pickup of food waste, e-waste, and hard to recycle plastics. This work was catalyzed by a Real World Deployment Grant from the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The Challenge looks to transform freight operations in Detroit’s Eastern Market by reducing fossil fuel emissions and cutting freight costs. At the Social Innovation Lab at The University of Kansas and Orange Sparkle Ball, we have been partnering on research to understand ecosystems. As a result of this work, we’re excited to release the first in a series of white papers, this one focused on ecosystem evaluation. If you’re an ecosystem builder, this one’s for you!? How do you know if you’re making enduring change at scale? Building ecosystems involves aligning all elements of such an undertaking, including diverse people, organizations, perspectives, and values, in the service of large-scale equitable change. The investment of time, resources, and social capital needed to bring together a network of people and organizations in the service of something bigger is extensive. Validating that it was worth it requires outcomes and impact. After all that effort, how do you know that you are making headway? Evaluating ecosystems can provide evidence that the effort by all parts of the network matters. Our Responsive Ecosystems for Change Evaluation Framework is a call to action to bring the best methods and tools we have available to validate and quantify impact at scale.
