When I was a postdoc at Harvard University, I worked in the group of George Whitesides. George has a lot of interests, and one of them is 'emergence,' the concept that incremental scaling can produce new patterns. One example is that if you make one measurement, or five measurements, you get isolated datapoints. But at some critical step in incrementing the number of measurements, they become more than isolated points as trends emerge. One style of project that George liked was, "we found a much cheaper and faster way to measure something, without sacrificing all precision." If you have a choice between making 100 quick, modestly sloppy measurements, or just one or two "careful" ones, you might learn more from the 100. This might help to explain my interest in the Orange Photonics, Inc. LightLab instruments. They don't really provide one-to-one replacements for any piece of lab equipment. Instead, they offer a piece of equipment that gets the measurement out of the lab, providing the world with a wealth of new information.
