One crucial aspect of quality concrete is low permeability, especially for durability against freezing and thawing. Concrete with low permeability resists water penetration, reducing susceptibility to damage. Water can enter pores in the cement paste and even in the aggregate. - Absorption: For concrete pavers, testing involves drying a specimen to a constant weight, weighing it, immersing it in water for a specified time, and reweighing it. The increase in weight as a percentage of the original weight indicates absorption, with an acceptable rate of up to 5% on average and no individual unit exceeding 7%. - Permeability: Permeability in concrete is distinct from absorption and relates to pore size, distribution, and continuity. It's not directly correlated with absorption but has been linked to the water-cement ratio (w/c) of concrete, which measures the water-to-cement ratio in a mix. To meet freeze-thaw requirements, our concrete pavers must be of high quality, characterized by low absorption, low permeability, and high density. These properties are achieved through high-performance concrete mixes incorporating low water-cement ratios.
