关于我们

Founded in 2008, ORAM - the Organization for Refuge, Asylum and Migration is a pioneer in advocating for the protection and well-being of extremely vulnerable LGBTIQ refugees and asylum seekers globally. ORAM is recognized as the first international NGO to assist people fleeing persecution based on their sexual orientation or gender identity and has since become a thought leader in LGBTIQ migration. We have a long and proud history educating and training refugee professionals on the particular needs of LGBTIQ asylum seekers and supporting LGBTIQ asylum seekers navigating the long asylum process from the moment they arrive in their first country of asylum to being resettled to a safe third country.?We collaborate with local partners and our beneficiaries to ensure that our work is built around the people we serve.

  • ORAM is proud to partner with and spotlight LBTIQ women refugees like Joan and Vanessa — a queer couple from Colombia who sought refuge in Mexico. As artists and mental health advocates, they founded Poesía Pintada, a queer refugee-owned business specializing in illustration, graphic design, and art therapy workshops. Through a partnership with ORAM, Poesia Pintada brought art therapy to 24 LGBTIQ refugees in Mexico City. Joan and Vanessa shared with ORAM what #InternationalWomensDay means to them and why supporting LBTIQ women refugees is so important. Stand with Joan, Vanessa, and ORAM in empowering LBTIQ women refugees. • ORAM's Humanitarian Inclusion Project, supported by Center for Disaster Philanthropy, expanded its impact to Kenya! ???? After training in Poland, Moldova, and Czechia, ORAM's Inclusion team brought its first round of inclusion training to Kakuma Refugee Camp and Nairobi—working with UN agencies, international humanitarian organizations, national non-governmental organizations, refugee-led organizations (RLOs), community-based organizations (CBOs) and LGBTIQ civil society organizations (CSOs) to create more inclusive humanitarian programming. "Our partners in Kenya were asking for this kind of training. The LGBTIQ refugee community also saw a gap in programming and wanted more support. I'm glad we did this." – Kennedy Mwangi, ORAM Program Assistant ?? • We couldn't agree more with Ali Arefi — engaging diverse stakeholders in conversations on LGBTIQ refugee inclusion is key to ensuring dignified protection. Thank you and Afghanistan LGBTIQ+ Organization (ALO) for participating in ORAM's recent inclusion training in Czechia, held in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Czechia.

LGBTQ+ Rights Activist & Human Rights Defender

I recently participated in a joint meeting between ORAM and UNHCR in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on Supporting Displaced LGBTIQ People in Humanitarian Settings. The meeting brought together key organizations working in this field, including ALO During the meeting, I discussed the urgent challenges facing the Afghan LGBTQ+ community, particularly LBTQ women, and the escalating crisis since August 2021. I also examined the factors driving many LGBTQ+ individuals toward the borders of the European Union and highlighted ALO’s efforts in providing financial and humanitarian aid, as well as our advocacy work with the European Union, the United Nations, and the International Criminal Court. One of the critical issues I raised was the shortcomings of the Czech asylum system in addressing LGBTQ+ needs. Many translators and immigration officers lack adequate knowledge of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, leading to exclusionary practices. Additionally, the absence of dedicated shelters for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, especially trans individuals, remains a major concern. I urged government representatives to take concrete action to address these systemic gaps. I believe engaging in discussions like these is essential in the fight for inclusive and dignified protection for LGBTQ+ refugees. There’s still a long way to go, but every step forward matters.

  • Three years later, Ukraine is still under attack — have we stopped paying attention? When Russia launched its full-scale invasion, the world stood in solidarity—speaking out, donating, and welcoming Ukrainians into their homes. For millions of displaced Ukrainians, including LGBTIQ refugees, this crisis is far from over. ORAM refuses to look away — we stand with LGBTIQ people forced to flee Ukraine and need you with us. ?????????????? ?? • Melissa Pierce, ORAM's Director of Development, calls for revolutionary action to support LGBTIQ refugees. LGBTIQ refugees face multiple layers of discrimination — targeted not only for their sexual orientation and/or gender identity but also for their refugee status. As humanitarian protections erode under the current U.S. administration, their safety is at greater risk. Now is the time to act. Donate to ORAM's Emergency Response Campaign to help protect, empower, and advocate for LGBTIQ refugee leaders like Dhalie. Swipe to hear how Dhalie is taking action in Kenya — and why Melissa is calling on all of us to do the same. Děkujeme skvělym p?edná?ejícím Adamu McNallymu (ORAM, Berlín), Ond?eji Mou?kovi (LGBTIQ aktivista Praha) a Arasu ?rgenovi (ORAM, Berlín) za jejich expertízu a inspiraci. Executive Director at ORAM - Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration

All the news around USAID and foreign assistance cuts - to say nothing of the attacks on immigrants, refugees and transgender people - can feel overwhelming and at times like a distant abstraction. But in my role at ORAM - Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration I get to meet and spend time with the people most impacted by these dramatic and horrendous policy changes. LGBTIQ refugees in Kenya, for example, face immense challenges, from delayed asylum processing to homophobic violence and rising anti-LGBTIQ sentiment across the country. A new Context Newsroom article sheds light on their struggles, featuring insights from past and present ORAM clients. These new policies and the accompanying funding cuts will only make their situation more dire and life-threatening. As one of the few organizations in Kenya supporting queer refugees, ORAM remains committed to providing sustainable solutions in Kenya and in other transit countries. Our work is more important than ever but in this new environment it’s more challenging than ever too. If you’re interested in getting involved and making a difference please let me know. My friend Enrique Anarte Lazo also produced a powerful new documentary for Context that tells this story through film. It captures both the joy and resilience of the community as well as the fear and uncertainty they face along with roadblocks to safety and stability. Several of ORAM’s clients, past and present, courageously share their experiences alongside an interview with our East Africa Program Manager, Winfred Wangari, who underscores the critical role of ORAM’s economic empowerment programs. The link to the article is in the comments below. DM me for the documentary link if you’re interested in seeing it. It’s very powerful!
