35 years between these two pictures. I worked in Formula One at AGS in 1990. While I was the race engineer of Gabrielle Tarquini, the design engineer was Michel Costa who created this wonderful AGS JH 25. The first picture of Michel (right) and I was taken during the official presentation of the car. ? 34 years later Michel, still passionate and still hungry for knowledge, attended the OptimumG applied Vehicle Dynamics seminar in Nevers end of October. Michel's own words: "Today, automotive technology belongs more to an army of specialists than to the men of synthesis that I have always tried to remain. Precisely, your Applied Vehicle Dynamics seminar represents a magnificent synthesis, which is why it brought me a lot of satisfaction. I would like to thank you immensely for this Nevers seminar, it really brought me a lot, and in many areas: the pleasure of meeting you again, 35 years (!) after our too short collaboration in Gonfaron. In your seminar, I really took great pleasure in exchanging with you, in discussions full of depth as much as nostalgia. We never get back lost time. I sincerely regret that we did not have the opportunity to extend what we had started in 1990. On a personal level, you were one of the few people I did not feel the need to distrust: direct, spontaneous, honest.

In the 27 years of OptimumG, and more specifically in the last 5 years, I have had the great honor and pleasure to teach in-house company in car and car part (tires, dampers, brakes, …) manufacturers and racing teams. I have been teaching vehicle dynamics and race car engineering at the highest level, including Formula One.? Every time I enter the building of such companies, I am a bit freaking out as I think I should be paying them to teach me. To my surprise it has never been the case. Why? Because I do speak to people who know their engineering domain 5, 10, many 20 times better than me… but they lack communication between these different disciplines or sometimes, even worse, they lack or gave forgotten some fundamentals. ? My role is to help them to connect the dots of, for example, tires, aerodynamics, kinematics, and suspension stiffness and damping. Recently, my friend Dr. Jacques Dallaire (performant prime) drew my attention on the Aristotle experiment made by Google. ?Here is just one extract: *” Initially, the researchers hypothesized that the most effective teams would comprise the best and brightest individuals. They expected that factors such as team members’ educational backgrounds, hobbies, or individual skill sets would play a significant role in determining team success. However, the data revealed something surprising: who was on the team mattered far less than how the team members interacted, structured their work, and viewed their contributions”* I could not help to connect the two observations. https://lnkd.in/d6uTAsaP

I will have the great pleasure and honor to once again attend the Formula Student Symposium (FSS) in Gy?r, Hungary (one hour drive from Vienna) on November 15th, 16th and 17th. I will present two topics: - From concept to validation: a proposed methodology for a Formula Student Racecar development based on the V-Shape model. So many parameters define car’s performance. How do they connect? Where and how do you start a car design? What tools and knowledge do you need? This presentation starts with the grasp of the best performance “big picture” and offers approach to the design of systems, subsystems, parts and their validation.? - Aeromap validation. Most Formula Students use CFD to define and quantify how wings, underwings and vortexes influence their car aerodynamics characteristics. Based on the principle that only validated simulations are useful, this presentation offers some advice on the tools and the methodology necessary to validate aerodynamics simulation with on-track testing.????? The symposium is a MUST for Formula students. It occurs at the right time: at mid-November, you can still make decisions for your car design and development and on preparation for future testing thanks to the advice and great Q&A sessions acquired at FSS. All that at a very affordable price. ? I think there are still a few seats available. ??????
