Dr. Ronald McNair was a renowned physicist specializing in laser technology and was one of just 35 individuals selected by NASA from a pool of 10,000 applicants in 1984. He made history as the second African American to travel into space, serving as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Challenger.?? Tragically, the Challenger mission ended shortly after launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Dr. Patricia Bath, a pioneer in ophthalmology and laser science, is best known for inventing the Laserphaco Probe, which transformed cataract surgery. She made history as the first African American to complete a residency in ophthalmology and the first African American female doctor to receive a medical patent.??
