It was great to welcome Adam Mangana, M.Ed. to our new Bay Ridge Prep Upper School building today! Adam and I first met in 2017 as he began his first summer and I began my last summer at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody Independent School Leadership Master's Program in Nashville. As an educator and school leader, he was on to something back then when it came to the intentional use of technology and virtual reality in the education space. Today, as the executive director and founder of OptimaEd, Adam gave me and some colleagues a glance into the resources and activities that virtual reality can bring into the classroom — in a controlled, thoughtful and meaningful way. We are in final testing phase just before the release of our #School of #AI and as part of testing we have full conversations with historic characters on a wide range of topics. If you could ask any person in history, alive or dead, one single question what would it be? Please put your suggestions in the comments below and we will ask for you if we have the character in our roster. For launch we will have 20 characters available along with additional related tasks and locations making this a fun and enjoyable experience for both educators and students. Interesting research by Dr. Lawrence Tychsen of Washington University School of Medicine published in Science Direct on the Effects of VR Headsets in Children. Dr. Tychsen's conclusion: "Young children tolerate fully immersive 3D virtual reality game play without noteworthy effects on visuomotor functions. VR play did not induce significant post-VR postural instability or maladaption of the vestibulo-ocular reflex. The prevalence of discomfort and aftereffects may be less than that reported for adults."
